Pop star Katy Perry will be part of an all-female crew on a historic mission to space aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard spacecraft. This mission, called NS-31, will be the first time a crew of all women flies into space since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova flew solo in 1963.
Katy Perry will be joined by an inspiring group of women, including Lauren Sanchez, a pilot and journalist who is engaged to Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin; CBS journalist Gayle King; NASA aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe; civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen; and film producer Kerianne Flynn.

The New Shepard spacecraft, named after Alan Shepard, the first American to travel into space, will launch on April 14, 2025, from West Texas. The launch is set for 7:00 pm IST. The mission will show the increasing role of women in fields like science, technology, engineering, and media, and it hopes to inspire young people, especially girls, to follow in their footsteps.
Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft is designed for suborbital flights, which means it will take the crew just beyond Earth’s atmosphere. The mission will last around 11 minutes, with the spacecraft reaching an altitude of 100 kilometers above Earth. This is the point where space begins, known as the Kármán line. During the flight, the crew will experience weightlessness and get to see amazing views of Earth through the capsule’s big windows.
The mission is important not just because of the all-female crew, but also because it shows how commercial space travel is growing. This will be Blue Origin’s 11th human flight, a big step forward for private companies in space exploration.
Katy Perry, who is also known for her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, shared her excitement about the mission. She hopes to inspire her young daughter and others to "reach for the stars." Her crewmates share this passion, bringing their unique experiences and perspectives to the flight.
If you want to watch Katy Perry’s historic space journey, Blue Origin will livestream the flight, and India Today Science will provide full coverage of the mission. You can watch it on Monday.
This mission is not just about reaching space; it’s also about showing how far women have come in science, space, and other fields. It's a great reminder that anyone can follow their dreams, no matter how big they are!
