Selvamani Selvaraj’s period drama Kaantha, featuring Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, Samuthirakani, and Rana Daggubati, released on Friday with strong expectations due to its nostalgic retro backdrop and impressive cast lineup. Set in 1950s Madras, the film attempts to recreate an era of artistic transformation in Tamil cinema, blending drama, emotion, and a behind-the-scenes look at early filmmaking. Despite the initial curiosity and pre-release attention, the film’s first weekend box office collections show a fluctuating pattern that reflects mixed reactions across regions.
Early box office estimates indicate that Kaantha collected ₹3.87 crore in India on Day 3 (Sunday), bringing its domestic total to ₹13.22 crore. The film opened on Friday with ₹4.35 crore domestically and ₹10.50 crore worldwide, thanks to Dulquer’s fanbase and the film’s unique concept. Saturday brought a noticeable rise in numbers, with ₹5 crore in India and ₹16 crore globally, creating a positive trend that suggested strong weekend growth. However, Sunday witnessed a decline, which points to uneven word-of-mouth reception and varying audience preferences.
Occupancy trends also reveal the film’s challenges. Tamil regions recorded 26.49% occupancy, showing relatively stronger engagement, while Telugu-speaking regions reported only 17.16%, reflecting a more subdued response. The clear difference in reception between the two linguistic markets indicates that the film’s appeal is uneven and influenced by regional sensibilities.
Viewers who connected with the film appreciated several elements. Dulquer Salmaan’s portrayal of TK Mahadevan has received widespread praise, with many noting that he committed fully to the retro acting style reminiscent of Tamil cinema icons from the 1950s. His expressive performance, traditional attire, and detailed body language helped bring authenticity to the character. Samuthirakani’s role as Ayya, a respected filmmaker and Mahadevan’s mentor, is another highlight, appreciated for emotional intensity and grounded realism. Bhagyashri Borse brings charm and sincerity to her role as Kumari, a young actor trying to find her place in a demanding industry. Rana Daggubati, appearing as Inspector Phoenix, adds an authoritative presence that strengthens the film’s dramatic moments.
At the same time, a portion of the audience pointed to narrative issues. Some felt the film’s pacing was too slow, particularly during the first half, which dampened engagement. The blend of period drama, interpersonal conflict, and the making of a fictional early horror film created a layered narrative that did not resonate equally with all viewers. The tonal experiment, while bold, may have limited the film’s appeal to mainstream audiences who prefer faster, more commercially driven storytelling. These factors contributed to divided word-of-mouth, which directly influenced Sunday’s box office dip.
The story of Kaantha unfolds in an era when Tamil cinema was undergoing creative evolution. Dulquer’s character, Mahadevan, is shown working on Saantha, a film positioned within the narrative as Tamil cinema’s first venture into the horror genre. His complex relationship with Ayya—once a mentor and now a professional collaborator—drives the emotional core of the story. Their conflicting visions and personal differences gradually escalate, affecting people close to them, including Kumari and Inspector Phoenix. The film uses this dramatic backdrop to explore early filmmaking culture, the burden of stardom, artistic ego, and the emotional costs behind creative pursuits.
Produced jointly by Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media, the film invests heavily in recreating 1950s Madras. From costumes and set design to lighting and camera techniques, the technical team aimed to build an immersive period environment. These efforts have been particularly praised and stand out as one of the film’s strongest achievements. The release of Kaantha was initially planned earlier but was postponed to avoid competition with another major release, giving it a clearer theatrical window.
With the weekend now complete, all eyes are on how Kaantha will perform during the weekdays. Sustaining momentum will require steady audience support, especially given the competitive film calendar ahead. While the film’s artistic choices and retro charm have drawn appreciation from niche audiences, its long-term box office success will depend on whether word-of-mouth strengthens or weakens in the coming days. For now, Kaantha remains an ambitious cinematic experiment that offers nostalgia, strong performances, and a glimpse into the early world of Tamil filmmaking, even as it navigates the challenges of an unpredictable box office landscape.
