Australia’s experienced fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been cleared of a serious injury after undergoing scans for a suspected hamstring problem. The incident occurred during a Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and Victoria at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Wednesday. Hazlewood, who reported tightness in his right hamstring, was taken off the field as a precaution. Fortunately for Australia, the scans showed no signs of a muscle strain, ensuring he will be fit for the first Ashes Test against England in Perth next week.

Precautionary Scans Bring Relief

Cricket Australia released a statement confirming the good news. “Hazlewood left the field late in Victoria’s innings at the SCG today, reporting tightness in his right hamstring. He underwent precautionary scans which have cleared him of muscle strain,” the statement said. The update brought relief to both the Australian camp and fans, who feared another injury setback ahead of the high-profile Ashes series.

The Australian cricket board further confirmed that Hazlewood would travel to Perth and join the national squad as originally scheduled. “He will join the Australian squad as planned in Perth and will train as planned in the lead-up to the first Test,” Cricket Australia added. This confirmation means Hazlewood remains on track to take part in the crucial opening match, which begins on November 21 at Perth Stadium.

While Hazlewood’s results were positive, his New South Wales teammate Sean Abbott was not as fortunate. Abbott, who was also included in the Test squad as a back-up fast bowler, suffered a moderate-grade hamstring injury during the same match. Cricket Australia announced that Abbott will not be available for selection for the first Test and that his recovery plan will be developed over the coming weeks. Abbott’s absence will likely limit Australia’s bowling depth in the early part of the series.

Cummins To Miss Series Opener

Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, is already ruled out of the first Ashes Test due to a back injury. This means the Australian pace attack for the Perth Test is expected to include Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Scott Boland. The trio will carry the responsibility of maintaining Australia’s bowling strength in Cummins’ absence. Hazlewood’s availability, therefore, comes as a major boost for the team as they prepare for the challenge against England’s aggressive batting lineup.

Before leaving the field, Hazlewood bowled nine overs and finished with figures of 1-22. However, he did not bat in the second innings and was visibly limping when shaking hands with players after Victoria’s win. Despite that, the fast bowler remained in good spirits, according to his captain Pat Cummins. “He’s chipper after the scan,” Cummins said, emphasizing that the team always takes a cautious approach when it comes to injuries, especially ahead of major series like the Ashes.

Cummins Explains Team’s Approach

Cummins, speaking at a sponsorship event, said the team wanted to be absolutely certain about Hazlewood’s condition before making any decisions. “We’re a week away from the Test series, so we always err on the side of caution. They wanted to find out what was happening before pushing it and potentially making anything worse,” he explained. His comments highlighted the team’s commitment to player welfare and readiness for the grueling Ashes schedule ahead.

The much-anticipated Ashes series between Australia and England begins in Perth on November 21. The second Test will take place in Brisbane, followed by matches in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney around the New Year. The series promises to be fiercely contested as both teams look to assert dominance in one of cricket’s oldest rivalries. For Australia, the focus will be on starting strong at home, and Hazlewood’s recovery will play a key role in achieving that goal.

Hazlewood’s clearance is a major boost for Australia’s bowling lineup, especially in the absence of their skipper. With Mitchell Starc’s left-arm pace, Boland’s accuracy, and Hazlewood’s consistency, the trio will aim to give Australia the edge in home conditions. The team management will monitor Hazlewood’s workload closely during training sessions in Perth to ensure he remains fully fit for the first ball of the Ashes.
