Japan lodged a formal complaint with China on Monday following “extremely inappropriate” comments made by a Chinese diplomat aimed at Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The remarks came after Takaichi suggested that Tokyo could consider military action if Beijing attacked Taiwan, a democratically governed island that China claims as its own territory.

China’s Consul General in Osaka, Xue Jian, posted on social media platform X a provocative message referencing an article in the Asahi newspaper covering Takaichi’s statement. The post read, “We have no choice but to cut off that dirty neck that has lunged at us without a moment's hesitation. Are you ready?” The remarks were widely condemned in Japan as threatening and inappropriate for a senior diplomat.

Tokyo’s Foreign Ministry has formally protested the remarks, emphasizing that such language undermines diplomatic norms and international stability. Japanese officials said they expect China to ensure its diplomats adhere to professional conduct.

The incident highlights growing tensions between Japan and China over security issues in East Asia, particularly regarding Taiwan. Takaichi’s comments reflect increasing Japanese concern over China’s military activities near Taiwan and the potential regional security implications.

China has yet to respond officially to Japan’s formal protest, but the exchange has drawn international attention as Tokyo reinforces its commitment to Taiwan’s defense and the rules-based international order. Analysts suggest that continued provocative statements risk escalating diplomatic friction between the two nations.

Japan’s government reiterated its stance that Taiwan’s security is vital to regional peace and warned that any threats or intimidation will be met with measured diplomatic responses.
