On Thursday, the Israeli military revealed that it had successfully eliminated a senior member of Iran’s elite Quds Force in a targeted operation in southern Lebanon. Israeli authorities assert that this individual played a pivotal role in orchestrating attacks against Israel from both Syria and Lebanon.
The operative has been identified as Hussein Mahmoud Marshad al-Jawhari, described by Israel as a significant figure in Unit 840, a secretive division of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This unit is thought to be responsible for international operations, including intelligence gathering and planning assaults.
Israeli officials claim that al-Jawhari was operating under direct orders from Iranian leaders, and he was engaged in what they categorized as “terror activities” aimed at Israeli military and security installations. His elimination reportedly took place in the Ansariyeh region of Lebanon, but the military has withheld additional operational details.
This incident escalates tensions between Israel and Iran, following a brief yet intense standoff earlier this year. Israel has been executing near-daily strikes in Lebanon, claiming these actions aim to thwart the Iranian-backed faction Hezbollah from re-establishing its military strength.
A U.S.-sponsored ceasefire agreement established in November 2024 put an end to more than a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The terms required Hezbollah to begin disarmament in areas situated south of a river near the Israeli border. However, Israel insists that Iranian-associated activities continue to threaten regional security significantly.
