Middle East — The already tense standoff between Israel and Iran took a dramatic turn this weekend. During early Saturday hours, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a sweeping airstrike campaign targeting over 100 sites in Iran, including nuclear facilities and military command centers. The operation deployed more than 200 fighter jets, with key targets such as the Natanz uranium enrichment site and IRGC headquarters in Tehran.
The Israeli military confirmed the elimination of Iran’s top military brass, including the Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri, IRGC Commander Hossein Salami, and commander Ghulam Ali Rashid. Iranian state media reported 78 deaths, consisting of military personnel and civilians, and injuries to over 320 people. Despite mounting regional fears, Iran’s atomic agency confirmed that there was no radiation leak from Natanz or the Bushehr power plant.

In a stern response, Iran launched a two-wave ballistic missile and drone strike at Israel roughly 18 hours later. According to Israeli sources, the assault involved fewer than 100 missiles and over 100 drones, most of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome and American THAAD systems . Nonetheless, some rockets struck urban areas, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, leading to at least three civilian deaths and dozens more wounded.
Both nations closed their airspace and activated civil defense protocols. Sirens wailed across Israeli cities, bomb shelters were opened, and civilians were warned to stay indoors. Simultaneously, Ben Gurion Airport halted operations .
Global leaders have urged both sides to halt further escalation. The UN Secretary-General called for restraint, while the European Union, New Zealand, and Australia voiced concern that the region is drifting dangerously closer to all-out war.
Prime Minister Netanyahu defended Israel’s actions, stating the operation would continue “for as many days as it takes,” aimed at neutralizing a growing nuclear threat . Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei labeled the attack a “declaration of war,” promising stern retaliation.
Markets reacted sharply: Brent crude oil prices jumped 7%, reflecting fears of regional supply disruption. Meanwhile, KLM and other airlines canceled flights to Tel Aviv, and nations such as Jordan and Iraq closed airspace temporarily .
Analysts say Israel’s decapitation-style strikes significantly weaken Iran’s military command hierarchy, but Iran’s powerful missile response demonstrates its continued deterrence capacity. Security experts warn that with regional actors like Hezbollah and the Houthis watching closely, the conflict could easily expand .
The world now stands at a dangerous juncture. Whether diplomacy or further military action comes next remains uncertain. What's clear is that the Middle East has entered a perilous new phase, with both nations deeply scarred—and the global community holding its breath.
