Ibrahim Aqil, a senior operations commander of Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday. His death marks a significant escalation in Israel’s ongoing campaign against the militant group, which has intensified following recent border clashes linked to the conflict in Gaza.

Aqil had a $7 million bounty on his head due to his involvement in two devastating truck bombings in Beirut in 1983 that resulted in the deaths of more than 300 individuals. The bombings targeted the American embassy and a U.S. Marines barracks, with the former attack killing 63 people and the latter claiming 241 lives.

Two security sources in Lebanon confirmed that Aqil was killed during a meeting of the elite Radwan unit, a specialized faction within Hezbollah. Known by aliases such as Tahsin and Abdelqader, he was a key figure in Hezbollah's military hierarchy and a member of the Jihad Council. His death follows that of Fuad Shukr, another high-ranking commander, who was killed in a similar Israeli strike in July.

The Israeli military has ramped up its operations against Hezbollah amid a backdrop of increased tensions following a deadly raid by Hamas in Israel on October 7. This incident has prompted a series of border clashes, leading to the recent surge in Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah leaders.

Aqil’s background reveals his long-standing involvement in Lebanese militant politics. Born in the Beqaa Valley around 1960, he initially joined Amal, a prominent Shiite political movement, before becoming a founding member of Hezbollah. The group was established in the early 1980s with the backing of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to combat Israeli forces that invaded Lebanon.

The United States has linked Aqil to the 1983 Beirut truck bombings and accused him of orchestrating the abduction of American and German hostages during Lebanon’s civil conflict. In 2019, the U.S. designated him as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, solidifying his status as a significant target.

Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, in a 2022 interview, sought to distance the group from the early bombings, claiming they were executed by small, independent factions rather than being official actions of Hezbollah.

Aqil was part of the original cadre of Hezbollah operatives who transformed the organization from a minor militia into Lebanon's most formidable military and political force. The group successfully pushed Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in 2000 and engaged in a conflict with Israel in 2006.

The loss of Aqil is viewed as a substantial blow to Hezbollah's command structure, echoing the repercussions of Shukr’s death earlier this year, which was regarded as one of the most significant setbacks for the group since the assassination of Imad Mughniyeh in 2008—a figure celebrated by Hezbollah but labeled a terrorist by Israel and the U.S. The implications of Aqil's killing may resonate deeply within Hezbollah, potentially disrupting its operations and strategic initiatives moving forward.
