In a major announcement today, Iran has confirmed that a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be visiting Tehran within the next ten days. This development comes at a time of growing tensions between Iran and some Western nations over its nuclear program. The Iranian government used this opportunity to reaffirm its full commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and sent a strong warning to European countries regarding the reactivation of the “Trigger Mechanism”, a diplomatic process that could lead to sanctions.
Iran emphasized that any such move could lead to serious consequences for the global nuclear non-proliferation system, which is designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

What is the IAEA and Why is It Visiting Iran?
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is a global organization that works to make sure countries use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and not to build nuclear weapons. It regularly inspects nuclear sites to ensure safety and compliance with international agreements.
Iran, as a member of the NPT, allows IAEA inspectors to visit its nuclear sites. This visit is part of that cooperation. However, Iran has recently expressed frustration with how the IAEA is handling things, calling its actions “politicised.”
According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the IAEA should only follow its technical duties and stay away from political pressures. Iran believes some countries are trying to use the IAEA to pressure Tehran unfairly.
What is the “Trigger Mechanism” and Why Is Iran Worried?
The Trigger Mechanism is a process built into the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. This process allows European countries like France, Germany, and the United Kingdom to refer Iran to the United Nations if they believe Iran is not meeting its nuclear commitments.
If activated, it could automatically bring back U.N. sanctions on Iran—something Tehran strongly opposes. Iran warned that this move would not only break trust but could also weaken the entire nuclear non-proliferation framework.
In other words, Iran is saying: if you bring back sanctions, we might stop cooperating fully with the nuclear rules, and that would be dangerous for everyone.
Iran Forms a Powerful New National Defence Council
In the same press conference, Iran made another important announcement. The government has set up a "Supreme National Defence Council", which is now the highest decision-making body for security and military matters in the country.
This new council will be headed by the Iranian President and will include top leaders such as:
The Speaker of the Parliament
The Head of the Judiciary
The Chiefs of Military Branches
Ministers from important security and defence-related departments
This new body is expected to reshape Iran’s military leadership and defence strategies. It was formed in response to serious security challenges after the Israeli-American military attack on June 12.
Iran did not provide full details about the June 12 incident, but officials have described it as a direct threat to Iran’s national security. As a result, the country is now changing how it handles defence to better protect itself in the future.
Iran’s Message to the World
Through these announcements, Iran is sending a clear message to the global community. It wants the world to know that:
It is still committed to international nuclear agreements.
It will not accept unfair treatment by international agencies.
It will defend its sovereignty and restructure its military in response to threats.
Iran believes that Western countries—especially in Europe—are not acting fairly. Instead of respecting Iran’s rights under the NPT, they are putting political pressure through mechanisms like the “Trigger Mechanism.”
Iran’s leadership is also warning that if this unfair pressure continues, it may respond by reducing cooperation with nuclear inspectors. This would be bad news for efforts to keep the Middle East nuclear-free.
What Happens Next?
In the next ten days, the IAEA team will arrive in Tehran. The world will be watching closely. Will the visit help rebuild trust? Or will it lead to more disagreements?
Iran’s statements suggest that it is still open to cooperation but wants fairness. At the same time, the formation of the new Supreme National Defence Council shows Iran is preparing for all possible scenarios—diplomatic or military.
Experts believe that the upcoming talks between Iran and the IAEA could play a big role in deciding how nuclear diplomacy moves forward in the region.
