The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has requested the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct an independent inquiry into a tragic shooting incident in Puerto Princesa, which led to the deaths of a corrections officer along with two police officers. This incident, occurring on Good Friday, has sparked significant worries regarding police actions and their operational protocols.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. stressed the importance of an unbiased investigation, particularly given that police officers were reportedly involved. Preliminary reports indicate that the corrections officer was abducted at gunpoint from his residence by individuals claiming to be police officers before the sound of gunfire was heard shortly thereafter.
The Philippine National Police has confirmed that four officers linked to the incident have been disarmed and taken into custody for responding without official clearance. Depending on the investigation's findings, these officers could face serious charges such as homicide or murder.
Authorities highlighted significant breaches of discipline, including reports of officers in civilian attire and suspected to be intoxicated. Both BuCor and the police have initiated separate inquiries, affirming their commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that no cover-up occurs. The family of the victim has been placed under protective custody as the investigation unfolds.
