New Delhi: A wave of disruption swept through key airports in India as IndiGo, a leading airline, experienced serious operational challenges resulting in more than 500 flight cancellations in just a few days. Passengers were seen sleeping on airport floors and frustrated travelers protested loudly against the airline, their luggage scattered across terminals in Delhi. Many described their ordeal as “mental torture,” citing inadequate communication, with no food or water for those who had been waiting for over 12 hours.
At Hyderabad airport, some passengers reported that they had been waiting since the previous afternoon, facing continual delays without any updates from airline personnel. Similar scenes unfolded at Goa and Chennai airports, where groups of irate passengers even obstructed flights to express their dissatisfaction. Airports in Vishakhapatnam and Pune also witnessed a significant number of cancellations, leaving many travelers with no immediate options. Officials at Pune airport attributed the delays to limited availability of gates, crew shortages, and overall congestion, while other airlines managed to maintain regular operations.
IndiGo acknowledged that deficiencies in their planning and staff shortages, particularly under new regulations, played a role in these disruptions. They also pointed out winter weather and airport congestion as exacerbating factors. Adjustments to night duty definitions and limitations on night landings were implemented in an effort to mitigate the chaos. The airline warned travelers to expect further cancellations in the coming days as they work to restore stability, with a reduced flight schedule set to commence from December 8 to avoid additional issues.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers recognized the difficulties ahead in normalizing operations, labeling it “a challenging objective,” while the airline extended a sincere apology to its passengers and stakeholders. The statement highlighted that IndiGo's teams, with assistance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA), DGCA, BCAS, AAI, and airport partners, are striving to alleviate delays and return to regular services as quickly as possible.
This widespread disruption has resulted in considerable inconvenience for travelers throughout India, with extensive delays and a breakdown of operations underscoring the pressing necessity for better strategic planning and support for passengers during peak travel times.
