Dozens of Indigenous protesters forced their way into the COP30 climate summit venue in Belem, Brazil, on Tuesday, clashing with security guards as they demanded urgent climate action and stronger protection for the Amazon rainforest.
The protesters, chanting slogans and waving flags calling for land rights, attempted to breach the UN compound where delegates from around the world are attending this year’s summit. Some carried signs reading, “Our land is not for sale,” and voiced strong opposition to agribusiness, oil exploration, illegal mining, and logging.
Gilmar, a leader from the Tupinamba community, emphasized the urgency of the Indigenous cause. “We can’t eat money,” he said. “We want our lands free from exploitation and destruction.”
Security personnel used tables and barricades to push back the protesters. Reports indicated that two guards sustained minor injuries—one required a wheelchair after being struck, while another received a head cut. Several heavy sticks were confiscated from the crowd. The protest dispersed after the confrontation, and security later allowed delegates to exit the venue safely.
A UN spokesperson confirmed that minor injuries and damage occurred but reassured that the venue is fully secured and COP30 negotiations continue. Investigations by Brazilian and UN authorities are ongoing.
Indigenous communities have been central to COP30 discussions, highlighting the crucial role of native peoples in forest preservation. Earlier this week, dozens of Indigenous leaders arrived by boat to the summit to assert greater influence over forest management policies. Chief Raoni Metuktire, a prominent Amazonian leader, urged Brazil to empower Indigenous communities to safeguard the rainforest.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has repeatedly emphasized the importance of Indigenous participation in climate policy and forest protection, noting that sustainable management of the Amazon is critical to global climate efforts.
As COP30 continues, Indigenous voices remain at the forefront, demanding urgent action against deforestation and climate change, underscoring the high stakes for both the Amazon and global environmental policy.
