Indian women’s cricket scripted history at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai by clinching their maiden Women’s World Cup title. Led by the dynamic Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian team defeated South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and fans alike.

The moment the Indian captain caught the final wicket—Nadine de Klerk, bowled by Deepti Sharma—the entire stadium erupted in cheers. The emphatic win marked a landmark achievement for Indian women’s cricket, etching their name alongside greats in the sport.

A Victory Built on Legacy and Respect

The Indian team did not just celebrate the win; they took a heartfelt moment to honor the legends who paved the way for this success. Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Anjum Chopra—stalwarts who had been instrumental in Indian women’s cricket’s journey—were presented with the World Cup trophy. All three were present at the stadium, attending in commentary roles, and had endured painful near-misses in the 2005 and 2017 World Cups.

Harmanpreet Kaur opened up about the significance of this tribute during an interview. She revealed how the squad had been deeply affected by the disappointment of the 2022 World Cup, especially knowing it was the last chance for veterans Jhulan and Mithali to win the title. “Smriti and I were sitting and talking, we were sad that we couldn’t deliver it for them,” Harmanpreet shared.

The captain added that the entire team had resolved to win the title with the legends present to witness and share the historic moment. Beyond Mithali, Jhulan, and Anjum, several former players and coaches like Diana Edulji, Shubhangi Kulkarni, and Sudha Shah (Harmanpreet’s debut coach) had kept the team motivated throughout.

Historic Achievement Joins Cricketing Royalty

Harmanpreet’s triumph places her among the few iconic Indian cricketers who have led the country to ODI World Cup glory—joining Kapil Dev (1983) and MS Dhoni (2011) in this elite group. Her words captured the essence of the moment: “To share this moment with them was something really special to us. We didn’t think of this moment without them.”

The Final: All-Round Brilliance

India’s victory was a collective effort, highlighted by some outstanding individual performances. Deepti Sharma’s five-wicket haul proved decisive, dismantling the South African batting lineup. Shafali Verma was the star with the bat, scoring a crucial 87 runs and contributing with two wickets, showcasing the team’s perfect all-round display.

A New Era for Indian Women’s Cricket

This historic victory is not just a trophy but a symbol of years of perseverance, growth, and the rising stature of women’s cricket in India. The emotional celebration was a testimony to the sacrifices of many who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and on the field.

As the team lifted the World Cup, they also lifted the hopes and pride of millions of fans across the country, heralding a bright future for Indian women’s cricket.
