India’s final T20 clash against Australia at the Gabba ended in disappointment for fans as persistent storms forced the match to be abandoned. However, the visitors sealed the series 3-1, showcasing their dominance ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.
After being sent in to bat, India’s openers Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma gave the team a flying start, racing to 52 without loss in just under five overs before lightning halted play. Gill looked in fine touch, smashing six boundaries on his way to 29 not out, while Abhishek remained unbeaten on 23, having survived two dropped catches by Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis.
Despite a sellout crowd’s patience, the stormy weather refused to clear, and the game was eventually called off more than two hours later.
Earlier in the series, the opening match in Canberra was also washed out, before Australia clinched the second game in Melbourne by four wickets, thanks to pacer Josh Hazlewood’s stellar bowling. With Hazlewood and other Ashes-bound players later withdrawn, India bounced back strongly — winning the third T20 in Hobart by five wickets and the fourth on the Gold Coast by 48 runs.
Young opener Abhishek Sharma was deservedly named Player of the Series, scoring 163 runs at an average of 40.75.“The way everybody chipped in across the series and we came back from being one down shows great character. It was a complete team effort,” said India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Australia skipper Mitch Marsh praised both sides for their competitive spirit, saying,“It was a good series — two teams really going at it. India won the games when it mattered, so congratulations to them.”
With the win, India — the world’s top-ranked T20 side — return home brimming with confidence and a strong squad depth ahead of their T20 World Cup title defence on home soil next year.
