India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing a difficult challenge. He is trying to keep good ties with both the United States and Russia while staying neutral in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. But recent actions by former US President Donald Trump have made this balancing act harder.
Donald Trump has criticized India for continuing to buy cheap Russian oil. He says India must pick a side in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump has threatened to raise tariffs (taxes on imports) on Indian goods to pressure India to stop buying Russian oil. Last week, he said tariffs on India would increase, but the exact amount is not clear yet.
Trump also pointed out that India buys a lot of military equipment and energy from Russia. He argues that these purchases support Russia during its war in Ukraine, which many countries want to end.
India needs a lot of oil to support its growing economy and large population of over 1.4 billion people. It is the third-largest oil consumer in the world. India buys about 36% of its crude oil from Russia, making Russia its top oil supplier.
After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, many European countries stopped buying Russian oil. Instead, Russia’s oil mostly goes to Asian countries like India, China, and Turkey. Russia sells oil to India at a big discount, which helps India save money.
India has tried to buy oil from many places, but switching away from Russian oil is not easy. India imports about 80% of its oil, and its own oil production is not enough. The country needs millions of barrels of oil every day.
Other oil producers, like the Middle Eastern countries, can increase production, but not quickly or enough to fill the gap left by Russian oil. India also had to stop buying oil from Iran and Venezuela because of US sanctions. This limits India’s options even more.
India says the US tariffs are unfair and "unjustified." India points out that the US and Europe still trade with Russia in other areas, such as fertilizers and chemicals.
Buying Russian oil at lower prices helps India keep its fuel prices lower for its people. If India stops buying Russian oil, it may have to pay more for oil from other countries. This could lead to higher fuel prices in India and even in the US and other countries.
Some of the Russian oil India buys is refined and exported to other countries, including the US and Europe. This helps India’s economy and keeps global oil prices more stable.
India and Russia have a long history of friendship. During the Cold War, India leaned more toward the Soviet Union, especially because the US supported Pakistan, India’s neighbor and rival. Russia has been a major supplier of military equipment to India for decades.
In recent years, India has also improved its ties with the US and buys weapons from the US and its allies. But India still remains the largest buyer of Russian arms.
Modi has a good relationship with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. However, Trump’s recent threats show growing tension between the two leaders.
India wants to keep good relations with both Russia and the US. But pressure from the US to stop buying Russian oil makes this difficult.
Experts believe India will continue to buy Russian oil for now but will slowly try to get more oil from other countries. This change will take time and cannot happen overnight.
If India stops buying Russian oil suddenly, global oil prices could rise, affecting many countries, including the US.
India is in a tough spot. It needs Russian oil to support its growing economy but faces pressure from the US to stop buying it. Prime Minister Modi must carefully balance these important relationships.
This situation shows how complicated global politics can be, especially when it comes to energy and trade. India’s decisions will impact not only its own people but also the world’s economy.
