India will begin their much-awaited two-Test series against South Africa on Friday in Kolkata, aiming to continue their strong form at home. The team will rely on their proven approach of posting big first-innings totals and using spin to dominate on turning pitches. With the series also set to visit Guwahati, India are looking to build further momentum in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
India enter this contest sitting third in the 2025–27 World Test Championship rankings. They began their campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw in England and followed it with a convincing 2-0 victory at home against the West Indies. The performances have strengthened India’s confidence under the leadership of captain Shubman Gill, who continues to grow as a Test leader.
South Africa, the reigning world champions, come into this series after drawing 1-1 against Pakistan in subcontinent conditions. While they are boosted by the return of captain Temba Bavuma, the challenge of Indian pitches remains one of the toughest in world cricket. The Proteas will look to adapt quickly, especially with their fast bowlers needing to perform on spin-friendly tracks in Kolkata and Guwahati.
Indian Batting Line-Up Looks Balanced
India’s batting order looks strong and balanced, featuring a mix of young energy and experienced calmness. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s aggressive style at the top perfectly complements the composure of his opening partner, KL Rahul, or skipper Shubman Gill, depending on the team’s final combination. Together, they have the potential to set the tone early against South Africa’s formidable fast bowling attack led by Kagiso Rabada.
India’s middle order has received a huge boost with the return of wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. Known for his fearless stroke play and match-winning ability, Pant’s comeback adds depth to the batting line-up. However, it also brings a selection dilemma, as young Dhruv Jurel performed impressively in Pant’s absence. Jurel’s solid batting and sharp wicketkeeping against the West Indies earned him praise, making it difficult for the selectors to leave him out.
South African Bowlers Face Spin Test
Kagiso Rabada will lead South Africa’s fast-bowling attack, supported by the likes of Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi. However, it will be the team’s spinners who may play a crucial role in this series. The Proteas’ ability to adjust to India’s turning pitches will determine how competitive they remain in the contest. India, on the other hand, are expected to unleash their spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin to exploit home conditions.
India’s dominance in home Tests has been unmatched in recent years. Their strategy of piling on large totals and putting pressure on opponents through relentless spin bowling has worked successfully. The players will be keen to continue that winning pattern against a South African side eager to prove their adaptability.
Selection Decisions Await Team India
The biggest question for the Indian selectors will revolve around the wicketkeeper’s role and the balance between pace and spin. With both Pant and Jurel deserving a spot, the management may consider playing one as a specialist batsman. The choice of the third spinner or seamer will also depend on the pitch conditions in Kolkata.
Cricket fans can expect two exciting matches filled with intense competition, strategic battles, and individual brilliance. Both teams have world-class players who can turn the game on its head, but India’s familiarity with home conditions and their spin strength make them the favorites to win the series.
