Hongqi has witnessed remarkable sales growth in recent years. From less than 5,000 cars in 2017, the brand's sales soared to approximately 412,000 in 2024, marking a significant 17.4% year-on-year increase, significantly outpacing China's overall auto sector growth of 5.8%. Targeting a goal of around 500,000 sales in 2025, this growth will be propelled by their electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids. Looking to the future, Hongqi aspires to achieve sales of one million cars, though no specific timeline has been established.

International Expansion Goals

In a competitive domestic landscape, Hongqi recognizes the importance of international markets for its growth strategy. FAW aims for 25% of Hongqi's sales to originate from overseas by 2030. In November 2024, Hongqi dispatched its inaugural batch of 600 EVs to Europe and plans to introduce 15 models across 25 European countries by 2028.

Germany presents a challenge as it is renowned for its loyalty to brands like Mercedes and BMW. However, Hongqi intends to win over consumers with cutting-edge technology, including an AI cockpit system found in its Tiangong EV series, featuring voice command capabilities, seat memory, and mood-based playlists.

Hongqi is also broadening its presence in Mexico and the Middle East, where it markets its luxury Golden Sunflower models in Kuwait. The company aspires to entice international customers through a blend of innovative technology, striking design, and competitive pricing.

Innovative Concepts and Sustainability

Hongqi's commitment to innovation is evident at auto shows, where it unveiled concept vehicles like flying cars and cars with biodegradable interiors made from materials such as seaweed and mushroom. The ultra-luxurious Golden Sunflower limousine, priced at 10 million yuan ($1.4 million), draws inspiration from ancient Chinese calligraphy, showcasing a fusion of tradition and modern opulence.

Obstacles Ahead

Despite its impressive domestic growth, Hongqi faces challenges in international markets. Lacking the advantage of being a domestic brand abroad, it will need to prove its worth to international customers. Competitors like Audi are also striving to retain their market presence by launching new EVs specifically for the Chinese market.

Nonetheless, Hongqi’s ascent illustrates the rapid evolution of Chinese automakers in producing advanced vehicles and appealing features while keeping prices competitive. Its transformation from a waning national icon to a formidable global competitor showcases the potent combination of design, technology, and national pride fueling its success.
