Holy Fire Ceremony Held Amid Tight Security in Jerusalem

On the Saturday before Easter, thousands of Christians came together in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulcher for a very old and emotional ceremony called the Holy Fire.

This event happens in a large and sacred church that was built in the 12th century. According to Christian tradition, this is the same place where Jesus was crucified, buried, and later rose from the dead.

Inside the dark church, worshipers stood holding unlit candles. Then, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch entered a small, holy space known as the Holy Edicule. When he came out, he was holding two candles that were lit with a flame believed to be miraculous. That fire is passed from candle to candle until the whole church is filled with glowing light. It’s a powerful symbol of hope, showing how light can defeat darkness.

After the ceremony, the flame is carried on special flights to Orthodox Christian communities in other countries.

Many Eastern Orthodox Christians believe that the flame appears by a miracle. But for hundreds of years, some people have said it’s just a trick to impress the crowd. Still, no matter what people believe, the Holy Fire ceremony is a very special and beautiful tradition that’s been happening for over 1,200 years.

However, the ceremony has also caused safety concerns. In the year 1834, a deadly stampede happened inside the church. So many people were packed inside that around 400 pilgrims died from suffocation or being trampled. At that time, the ruler of the land barely escaped, according to historian Simon Sebag Montefiore.

Because of the risks, Israeli authorities have recently tried to reduce the number of people attending. But church leaders are not happy about this. They say it interferes with the long-standing and unwritten rules about how Jerusalem’s holy places are managed — a set of traditions called the status quo.

This past Saturday, there were many Israeli soldiers and police officers around the area. Worshipers had to pass through strict checkpoints to enter. Reporters from the Associated Press saw one man being arrested and some women getting into fights with the police because they weren’t allowed into the courtyard.

Some people felt sad about the smaller crowd this year. They said the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, which has lasted for over 18 months now, is keeping many people away.

“The number of police is higher than the number of pilgrims,” said Adeeb Joude, the person who holds the keys to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Israel took control of East Jerusalem, including the Old City, during the 1967 war. That part of the city includes very important places for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Israel later claimed that area as part of its own country, but most of the world doesn’t agree with that move. The Palestinians, on the other hand, want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future country.

The Old City is often tense. Different religious groups live and worship very close to each other, and sometimes even groups within the same religion fight over how things should be done. In the past, disagreements inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher have even turned into fights between monks from different Christian groups.

Israel says it wants to protect the rights of all religions and allow everyone to worship freely. It often says it’s a place of religious tolerance in the Middle East. But in recent years, local Christian communities — many of whom are Palestinian — have said they feel under pressure. Because of years of conflict and hard living conditions, many of these Christians have left to live in other countries.

The Holy Fire ceremony continues to shine as a symbol of faith and tradition, but it also highlights the deep struggles and tensions in one of the world’s most sacred cities.
