Hatta, a gem of the UAE nestled in the Hajar Mountains, is rapidly emerging as a global example of harmony between nature and modern living. Under the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, DEWA has been instrumental in transforming Hatta into a sustainable tourism and innovation hub, blending heritage preservation with advanced technology.

Reviving Heritage Through Innovation

DEWA’s initiatives in Hatta focus on enhancing domestic tourism while maintaining environmental integrity. Using sustainable materials and cutting-edge technologies adapted to Hatta’s unique geology, every project aligns with international environmental standards. Landmark initiatives include the Hatta Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Power Station, the first of its kind in the GCC, capable of delivering full grid power within 90 seconds.

The authority has also strengthened Hatta’s water infrastructure with a desalinated water reservoir of 30 million imperial gallons and microfiltration units capable of treating three million gallons per day. Strategic water interconnections with other emirates and the Shams Dubai initiative further reinforce resource sustainability.

Tourism Meets Sustainability

Hatta’s appeal as a tourist destination is elevated through projects such as the Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls. Positioned along the upper dam slope of the hydroelectric plant, the site features the world’s largest mosaic mural, celebrating the UAE’s Founding Fathers. The installation combines artistry with eco-conscious design, showcasing Hatta’s cultural and natural heritage.

Al Rayan Mosque: A Symbol of Green Architecture

The Al Rayan Mosque stands as a testament to sustainable architecture and urban planning. Achieving three global records, it became the first mosque in the world to receive LEED Zero Carbon certification in 2025, offsetting 175% of its annual carbon footprint. Solar panels covering the parking and ablution areas produce at least 150% of the mosque’s energy needs, sending surplus power to the grid. The mosque also features EV charging stations, water treatment systems, advanced air purification, and accessibility facilities, combining functionality with environmental responsibility.

A Model for the Future

Hatta’s transformation illustrates how development can coexist with nature. Through innovative energy, water, and tourism projects, DEWA is setting a global benchmark for sustainable urban planning while preserving the unique charm of Hatta.
