His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), commended the agency’s dedication to modernizing its infrastructure through advanced technologies, aligning with the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy and supporting the ambitious UAE Centennial 2071 vision. During a recent Board of Directors meeting, Sheikh Hamdan lauded the significant backing the EAD receives from His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, crediting this support as instrumental in propelling the agency forward in its mission to protect and sustain Abu Dhabi’s natural resources and implement the EAD’s corporate strategy for 2021–2025.

Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the agency's progress toward achieving its strategy by 2025, with a comprehensive plan to complete 300 projects based on 36 key environmental indicators. These indicators measure progress across critical environmental objectives, including emission reductions, resource efficiency improvements, and enhancements in air and water quality, among others. He praised the EAD’s impressive milestones, noting that it had already achieved 90 percent of its listed projects and 86 percent of its tracked environmental indicators, underlining the agency's unwavering commitment to sustainability.

Sheikh Hamdan underscored the EAD’s prominent role on the regional and global environmental stage, where it has taken the lead in areas such as climate change adaptation and enforcement of environmental regulations. He also commended the agency for its global standing in AI integration and data generation, emphasizing its recognition as one of the top three organizations globally for sustainable applications and environmental data insights. Furthermore, EAD achieved high international rankings, including third place in sustainability applications and second in environmental education and community engagement initiatives. According to Sheikh Hamdan, these achievements reflect EAD’s capacity to leverage advanced technology in safeguarding the environment and developing data-driven strategies to tackle pressing environmental issues.

The meeting, held at Nakheel Palace, brought together key figures in the UAE’s environmental and governmental sectors, including Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment; His Excellency Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development; His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi; and Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of EAD. Additional attendees included His Excellency Musabbeh Al Kaabi, Executive Director of the Low-Carbon Solutions and International Growth Directorate, His Excellency Nasser Mohammed Al Mansouri, Undersecretary of the Office of the Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region, and Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD.

During the gathering, Sheikh Hamdan reviewed the progress of EAD’s upcoming five-year strategy, covering 2026–2030, which places a strong focus on artificial intelligence. The strategy aims to boost the agency’s capability to monitor ecosystems and swiftly respond to real-time environmental shifts. By utilizing continuous aerial imaging and environmental surveillance, EAD seeks to become the first government environmental entity to fully integrate AI into its operations, ushering in a transformative phase for the agency. Through this technological advancement, the agency aspires to be at the forefront of innovation in environmental governance, positioning itself to optimize resources and drive technological growth by 2030.

As part of its AI initiatives, EAD is working on creating a digital twin of Abu Dhabi's ecosystems, including various smart applications integrated into the agency’s functions. This digital twin, essentially a virtual replica of Abu Dhabi’s natural assets, will enhance EAD’s ability to track and predict environmental trends, assess natural resource usage, and refine policy impacts through advanced simulations before full-scale implementation. Among the practical applications planned within the digital twin project is an Oil Spill Detection system, which will accurately locate oil spills in the marine environment, facilitating rapid response and minimizing ecological damage. Additionally, an Outfall Monitoring tool will employ satellite imagery to oversee environmental compliance and prevent pollution across Abu Dhabi’s waterways.

Other pioneering projects under development include a Fish Species Identification and Counting application, which uses underwater imaging to identify and quantify fish populations, providing essential data to support sustainable fisheries management. AI-driven technology will also be utilized to analyze underwater video footage, aiding in the identification and preservation of marine habitats. On land, advanced AI tools will help recognize various animal species, including birds and other wildlife, furthering conservation efforts. Additionally, an Environmental Change from Imagery tool will utilize aerial and satellite images to monitor changes in habitats and ecosystems, bolstering efforts to protect Abu Dhabi’s natural resources.

The EAD is also constructing an advanced Environmental Data Platform, an AI-powered system that will deliver valuable insights to support informed decision-making, streamline conservation strategies, and bolster environmental stewardship across Abu Dhabi. Through these innovations, EAD is setting a benchmark for sustainability and environmental data utilization, advancing not only its mandate within the emirate but also solidifying its reputation as a global leader in environmental protection.

In conclusion, Sheikh Hamdan’s address emphasized the critical role of AI in driving the agency’s environmental objectives and expressed confidence in the EAD’s continued journey toward sustainable development. By combining cutting-edge technology with a steadfast commitment to the environment, the EAD is not only enhancing its operational efficiency but also setting a global example of how technology can be harnessed to safeguard natural resources and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
