Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are moving closer to a major decision that could reshape the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. After repeated attacks on their territories and rising concerns over Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf nations are now seriously considering joining the US and Israel in their war against Iran.
For weeks, countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar had avoided direct involvement. They warned against escalation and believed diplomacy could help reduce tensions. However, recent developments have forced a shift in their approach.
The turning point came after Iran launched missile and drone attacks targeting key infrastructure across the Gulf region. One of the most significant incidents was the strike on Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas facility, which raised serious concerns about regional security and economic stability. These attacks directly impacted vital sectors such as oil, gas and tourism.
At the same time, Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz have added to the crisis. The country has effectively disrupted one of the world’s most important energy routes and even hinted at imposing transit fees. This has alarmed Gulf nations, as a large portion of global oil supply passes through this route.
As a result, Gulf countries now believe that staying neutral may carry greater risks than taking action.
Saudi Arabia has already signaled a policy shift by allowing the United States to use King Fahd Air Base for military operations. This marks a clear change from its earlier cautious stance.
Meanwhile, the UAE is considering freezing billions of dollars worth of Iranian assets held within its financial system. If implemented, this move could significantly impact Iran’s economy, which is already under pressure due to war and inflation.
Gulf leaders are also pushing the US to ensure that any resolution to the conflict weakens Iran’s military capabilities. Their main objective is to prevent Iran from continuing attacks on neighboring countries in the future.
Despite closer coordination, there is still some frustration among Gulf nations regarding the US response. Officials believe that Washington underestimated Iran’s retaliation and did not plan adequately for the consequences.
Even with these concerns, Gulf countries remain focused on one goal — ensuring that Iran does not emerge stronger from the conflict. The coming days are expected to be crucial as these nations decide their level of involvement in the war.
