Google has taken a significant step in its India strategy, joining hands with venture capital firm Accel to fund a new wave of early-stage AI startups in the country. The collaboration marks Google’s first-ever investment partnership of this kind, signalling how rapidly India is rising on the global AI map.
The initiative will support a minimum of ten young AI companies, with Google’s AI Futures Fund and Accel co-investing up to $2 million in each selected startup. The focus areas include entertainment, creativity, workplace tools and coding — segments where Indian founders have shown sharp momentum in recent years.
The move comes at a time when major U.S. technology companies are turning their attention to India’s fast-expanding digital ecosystem. Nearly a billion people now access the internet in the country, making it one of the world’s most important future AI markets. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon and OpenAI have all intensified their India outreach over the past year, seeking a foothold as demand for AI-powered services surges.
Google’s investment outlook in India has grown notably stronger. Just last month, the company announced a $15 billion commitment over five years to build an AI data centre in Andhra Pradesh — its largest investment in the country to date. The AI Futures Fund, launched only six months earlier, has already supported more than 30 companies across regions, among them India-based Toonsutra and U.S. legal-tech startup Harvey. Google has also widened access to its Gemini AI by partnering with Reliance Jio to offer the service to more than 500 million users.
India’s AI industry is moving in parallel with this global acceleration. Estimates place the domestic market at $17 billion by 2027. Internationally, AI spending is expected to approach $1.5 trillion next year and pass $2 trillion in 2026, underscoring why technology giants are deepening their bets now.
With the new fund, Google and Accel are positioning themselves early in India’s next chapter of AI innovation — a chapter likely to be driven by agile teams, ambitious ideas and one of the world’s most dynamic digital user bases.
