A Chinese startup, DeepSeek, has been getting a lot of praise, especially from Demis Hassabis, the boss of Google’s AI research team, DeepMind. Hassabis said that DeepSeek’s new model is “an impressive piece of work.” He also mentioned that it could be “the best work” he has seen come from China. He shared these thoughts during an event held by Google before the Paris AI Action Summit, which is happening over the next two days.

DeepSeek made a big announcement recently. They said they developed a new open-source AI model called R1. The startup claimed they were able to create R1 at a much lower cost than other leading companies in AI, using less expensive computer chips. This news caused a big stir in the tech world and led to stock prices falling in many countries. A lot of people in the tech industry were surprised by the news and wondered about the impact of this new model.

Even though DeepSeek is getting a lot of attention, Demis Hassabis said that the excitement around this new model might be a bit too much. He explained that while DeepSeek did a great job with its model, it doesn’t really bring anything new to the science of AI. He said the model uses old ideas and well-known techniques, not new breakthroughs.

Looking at the future, Hassabis talked about how close we might be to creating AI systems that think and learn like humans. This is called “artificial general intelligence,” or AGI. He believes we might be only five years away from such systems, which would be very exciting. However, he also said that society needs to be ready for these big changes and figure out how to make sure AI benefits everyone while avoiding any dangers it might bring.

Hassabis also mentioned that as AI grows, it is important for governments to create rules to guide how it is used. But he pointed out that this is difficult because AI is still a new and fast-moving technology. He said countries need to work together to make good rules, even though it’s tough right now.

In short, while DeepSeek’s model is getting a lot of praise, Demis Hassabis believes the excitement might be a little too much. He is hopeful about the future of AI, especially when it comes to creating machines that think like people. But he also wants to make sure we are ready for these changes and that we handle them carefully. He believes that with the right rules, AI can help everyone, but only if we work together.
