Gmail Faces Spam Filter Glitch, Users Report Inbox Chaos

Over the weekend, Gmail users reported widespread inbox issues, including promotional emails landing in wrong tabs, unusual spam warnings, and delayed message deliveries. Some users even faced login and two-factor authentication delays due to late emails.

TechCrunch first highlighted the problem, and Google later confirmed the issue affected Gmail’s spam detection and automatic email sorting. On the Google Workspace Status Dashboard, the company explained that some users experienced “misclassification of emails in their inbox,” “extra spam warnings,” and delays in receiving messages.

Google said the problem has now been resolved. However, misclassified spam warnings may still appear on messages received before the fix.

Users shared screenshots on social media showing inboxes filled with emails that normally bypass the Primary tab. Some messages displayed alerts advising extra caution because they were not fully scanned. The Verge reported the disruption affected both spam filtering and Gmail’s automatic sorting system, prompting complaints across forums and Reddit.

Google has promised a detailed post-incident analysis once its internal review is complete. The incident highlights how dependent modern communication is on automated filtering systems, and even short disruptions can impact email security, logins, and daily workflows.
