Dubai, UAE – 8 December 2025: The FIA’s United Against Online Abuse (UAOA) campaign proudly welcomes Ghada Ashour, a 24-year-old Palestinian student, as the fifth scholar in its flagship research scholarship programme. Designed to empower the next generation of researchers, the programme focuses on combating online abuse in sport through rigorous academic study and practical solutions.
Ghada, who grew up in Gaza, previously studied remotely before earning her place on the UAOA scholarship, enabling her to continue her research at Dublin City University (DCU), Ireland. She was selected for her deep interest in social media and her passion for understanding and mitigating online abuse in sport.
Since its launch in 2023, the UAOA scholarship programme has provided young professionals and students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research on the prevalence, impact, and prevention of online abuse in sport. The scholarship, funded by the FIA Foundation, supports scholars with full tuition, mentorship from leading experts, and hands-on experience in data collection and analysis. Scholars also gain the opportunity to present their research at UAOA events, engaging with sports federations, policymakers, and digital platforms globally.
Ghada’s research will examine the link between athlete activism and online abuse, exploring how athletes’ advocacy on social, environmental, and human rights issues can attract both positive attention and significant online harassment. Her thesis will be published in English and translated into Arabic to ensure wide accessibility.
FIA President and UAOA Founder, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, said:
"The FIA is committed to creating global opportunities while fostering the next generation of leaders. Ghada’s research will broaden the international understanding of online abuse in sport and contribute to safeguarding its future."
Expressing her gratitude, Ghada Ashour stated:
"This is a dream come true. I am eager to advance research in online abuse in sport and contribute to a subject that affects countless lives every day."
The UAOA 2025 Barometer Report highlights the urgency of this research, revealing that 75% of sports federations report ongoing threats against athletes and their families, while 90% believe abuse could drive athletes away from their sport.
The inaugural cohort of UAOA Scholars included participants from Italy, South Africa, the UK, and Mexico, reflecting the programme’s global reach and commitment to diverse perspectives.
Dublin City University, renowned for its expertise in online abuse research, supports UAOA scholars with mentorship, data analysis, and research resources, ensuring they develop actionable insights that can influence policy and protective measures in sport worldwide.
