The United States and Chinese militaries held “frank and constructive” maritime security talks from November 18 to 20 in Hawaii, aiming to restore military communications after months of tensions. The discussions, organized under the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) working group, focused on safety and cooperation at sea and in the air.
Officials from both sides exchanged views on the current maritime and air security situation between the two countries. The talks also reviewed past encounters between US and Chinese naval and air forces to improve professional interaction and prevent accidents.
The Chinese navy criticized US freedom-of-navigation operations in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, stating that such actions infringe on China’s sovereignty. The United States, on the other hand, highlighted concerns over Chinese military activities around Taiwan and its growing presence in the South China Sea.
These working-level meetings follow a similar session held in April, marking the first regular military discussions since the start of the second term of US President Donald Trump. The talks are part of ongoing efforts to improve communication, transparency, and safety in regions where both militaries operate closely.
The Pentagon emphasized the importance of continued dialogue to better understand China’s military modernization, regional posture, and nuclear weapons development. Both sides plan to continue these discussions with a follow-up meeting scheduled in 2026.
These talks reflect gradual steps by the US and China to reduce misunderstandings at sea and in the air, maintain regional stability, and prevent military conflicts despite ongoing diplomatic and trade tensions.
