A powerful and emotional self-portrait by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has made history in New York after selling for $54.66 million at Sotheby’s. The painting, titled El Sueño (La Cama) or The Dream (The Bed), is now the most expensive artwork ever sold by a woman artist at auction. The record previously belonged to American painter Georgia O’Keeffe, whose 1932 piece sold for $44.4 million in 2014. Kahlo’s sale surpasses that number by a wide margin, showing her continued rise in the global art market.
The painting was created in 1940, a time that was both difficult and important in Kahlo’s life. Sotheby’s explained that this decade was shaped by her troubled marriage with fellow artist Diego Rivera. Many of her most powerful works were painted during this emotional period. The auction house described the painting as deeply personal and filled with meaning. It shows Kahlo asleep in a floating bed among clouds, while a skeleton wrapped in sticks of dynamite stands above her. Experts say the piece blends traditional Mexican cultural symbols with modern European surrealism. Although Kahlo often said she did not completely agree with being labeled a surrealist, many believe this work reflects the style strongly.
Sotheby’s announced that the buyer chose to remain anonymous. The sale confirms Kahlo’s status as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Critics and historians noted that her work continues to connect with audiences around the world due to its raw emotion, honesty, and bold symbolism. Kahlo, who died in 1954 at the age of 47, left behind a legacy that has only grown in value and importance. Her art tells stories of pain, strength, culture, and identity, and this latest sale proves that collectors and museums continue to view her as one of the most powerful voices in art.
This record-setting sale came just two days after another major moment at the same auction house. A painting by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt sold for $236.4 million, becoming the second most expensive artwork ever sold at auction. The highest price remains Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, which sold for $450 million in 2017. These major sales show that the global art market continues to grow and that historic works of art still attract major interest from collectors.
Kahlo’s achievement marks a proud moment for Mexican art and for women artists worldwide. It reflects not only the financial value of her work but also the emotional power and lasting influence she has left on art history.
