The Rise of Football in Dubai
By Joseph Agbobli
Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is globally known for its iconic tourist attractions, luxury lifestyle, and futuristic skyline. Every year, millions of visitors are drawn to the city to experience its unique blend of culture, innovation, and entertainment.
While Dubai has not traditionally been viewed as a global football hotspot, the city is steadily building a strong football identity alongside the growing popularity of the UAE Pro League — the country’s top-tier professional competition.
Beyond its vibrant nightlife and architectural marvels, a quiet but powerful football culture is emerging. Across the city, football academies are being established to nurture young talent, with Alliance Football Club standing out as one of the key contributors to this transformation.
How Alliance Football Club Is Changing Football’s Narrative in Dubai
Alliance Football Club is more than just a football academy. It has become a second home for young boys and girls, offering a safe, structured, and nurturing environment where players grow both on and off the pitch.
As part of an effort to understand how Dubai is rapidly positioning itself as a football hub in the Middle East, DXB News Network spoke with Nuno Samarra, Chief Operating Officer of Alliance Football Club.
Samarra is a UEFA B License coach with extensive international experience, having worked as a head coach across youth and senior levels. He has also served as a technical director for Sporting Clube de Portugal academies in Portugal.
Speaking on the club’s philosophy and journey, Samarra explained:
“Alliance Football Club has been here for the last 10 years, so it's a known brand. But it's more than just football. Worldwide, less than one percent of youth academy players eventually become professionals.
“Our focus is holistic development. Through football, we teach life skills — resilience, discipline, education, and hard work — qualities that matter whether or not a child becomes a professional footballer.”

A Highly Competitive Football Ecosystem
Samarra highlighted the competitive nature of Dubai’s football landscape:
“Dubai alone has over 250 football academies. This level of competition is unlike anywhere else in the world. It forces academies to constantly improve and differentiate — not only in methodology, but also in human development.
“Even the biggest academies in Europe believe their system is the best. But football is bigger than one philosophy. In a place like Dubai, success comes from developing players both technically and personally.”
Government Support and Infrastructure Driving Growth
The role of UAE authorities has been instrumental in the sport’s development.
“The UAE government, especially the Dubai Sports Council, has created outstanding facilities. These environments allow clubs to operate at levels many countries cannot support.
“The competitive structure also gives young players the opportunity to pursue professional and national pathways if they choose.”
Igor Jesus: Inspiring Dubai’s Football Dreamers
As Dubai hosts more regional and international tournaments, player development has accelerated. One standout success story is Igor Jesus, now a Premier League footballer.
Few know that the Brazilian forward spent his formative years in Dubai — a testament to the city’s growing influence on global football talent.
Igor began his professional career at Curitiba, debuting at 18. In 2020, he joined UAE club Shabab Al Ahli, scoring 43 goals and registering 20 assists in 88 appearances. His performances made him one of the most exciting talents to emerge from the UAE football scene.
After returning to Brazil in 2024 to join Botafogo, his form earned him a call-up to Brazil’s World Cup qualification squad. He has since signed a long-term deal with Premier League side Nottingham Forest.
Reflecting on his journey, Samarra said:
“Igor spent critical development years in the UAE. Those ages — 18 to 22 — are vital for any professional. His success proves that the UAE can have a real impact on a player’s career.
“These stories must be shared. They inspire thousands of young players here and show that reaching the highest levels of football is possible with talent, discipline, and resilience.”
A Bright Future for Football in Dubai
As author Colin R. Davis once noted, the roads to success and failure are often the same — perseverance makes the difference. While not every young footballer’s dream will be realized, Dubai’s growing football ecosystem is creating opportunities that were once unimaginable.
With strong infrastructure, committed academies, and inspiring success stories, Dubai is steadily redefining its place on the global football map — and changing lives along the way.
