In the tapestry of lives that intertwine across the United Arab Emirates, few stories shine with the same vibrancy as that of Feeyola Dawood. South African by birth and Emirati by choice, she embodies a rare paradox: a woman who is at once loud and colourful, yet deeply serene. To meet her is to meet someone who radiates warmth, generosity, and positivity, a spirit that reflects both the rainbow heritage of South Africa and the enduring resilience of the human heart.
Her journey is not one of ease, but of evolution. Once a woman who reshaped herself to fit the image of her husband, Feeyola found that life after divorce demanded she rediscover the essence of who she was before. What emerged was not only the return of her natural extroversion and energy, but a stronger, wiser, and more determined version of herself. She became someone unafraid to follow her own path — in fashion, in words, in friendships, and in life choices. She describes herself as extraordinary in the truest sense, someone who refuses to settle for ordinary when life itself offers infinite colour.
South Africa, the land of her birth, runs through her like a lifeline. “We are all heart,” she often says of her people, and in that simple phrase lies an ocean of meaning. South Africans are known for their humour, their warmth, and their loyalty, even in the face of difficulty. They know life is imperfect, yet they show up every day and do the best they can. Feeyola carries this ethos with her into every room she enters. She makes friends easily, welcomes strangers to her dinner table, and embraces diversity with the kind of gratitude and openness that can only come from one raised in the “Rainbow Nation.”
But her story is not just one of light; it is one of shadows overcome. When divorce shook her world, it left scars of embarrassment and hurt. She remembers the whispers, the sidelong glances, the pity she neither wanted nor needed. What she needed was strength, and so she chose to rise. She wiped her tears, forced herself to smile, and deliberately stepped into a new life. It was in that moment of being “bent but not broken” that she discovered the wings of resilience. She chose to leave South Africa behind and begin anew in the UAE, where she would write and publish Mother’s Know: Letters to My Global Daughters, become a coach, and live a life grounded in positivity. In her words, every obstacle became a stepping stone — not only for herself, but for her children who looked to her for stability and strength.
Feeyola is quick to admit she is far from perfect. Yet, paradoxically, it is her imperfections that she treasures most. Her wit, her humour, her flashes of logic, and even her delightful randomness make her who she is. In conversation, she might suddenly leap into a thought that veers away from the subject at hand — what some might find frustrating, she embraces as spontaneity, a stress reliever, and a gateway to authenticity. In her eyes, life is never black and white; it is full of unexpected colour. And when colour is added, everything becomes more beautiful.
She recalls the moment she realized that when a marriage or structure you lean on falls apart, you are left only with yourself — and how you step forward determines your wings or your downfall. For her, wings prevailed. That breakdown became her first stepping stone, the foundation for the woman she is today. She learned that good often comes from painful moments, though we rarely see it at the time. It is only when blessings unfold that we recognize how trials were shaping us into who we were meant to become.
Her ability to see beauty where others might see dirt is not just a poetic phrase, but a philosophy. She has trained her mind to reframe situations, to inject colour into dullness, to walk away when necessary, and to gravitate toward people who value authenticity. She often says that when you live on your own terms, seeing life differently, you break the shackles of control. You become free.
Much of this wisdom comes not only from her mind, but from her heart. Her heart has known the searing pain of heartbreak, but it has also taught her to listen to its silent voice. In time, she learned the art of forgiveness, both of herself and of others. She forgave her ex-husband, not for his sake, but for hers. She forgave herself for every tear shed over a closed door, for every box of tissues wasted on despair. Forgiveness became her unchaining, the moment she decided to step into the present and safeguard her heart for better things. Today, her heart gives and receives in abundance, constantly replenished by respect, gratitude, and love.
Central to her story is the kitchen table. For many families it is a place to eat, but for Feeyola, it is sacred ground. It is where homework was done, where daily conversations unfolded, where bruises were kissed and heartbreaks were soothed. It was around that table that she discovered her own resilience after divorce, as she sat with her children and realized they would be okay. Her children saw her as their pillar of strength, and in their faith in her, she found faith in herself. That first dinner together after the divorce was not just a meal, but a turning point — the foundation of independence and unconditional love.
Cooking, too, is central to her healing and creativity. She calls food her love language. Preparing meals for others is her way of showing care and of resetting her own spirit. Even the simplest sandwich, teased about by her family, became a comfort. In the UAE, her love of cooking grew into a passion that brought calm after long days. She found joy in preparing quirky, quick meals for friends and family, delighting in the laughter and togetherness that food inspires. Food, for Feeyola, is never just sustenance; it is love served on a plate.
Her travels have further shaped her empathy and outlook. Later in life she discovered the joys of exploring new cultures, of sitting at strangers’ tables, of witnessing the simplicity of lives lived with contentment. She learned that people across the world face the same struggles, only in different accents. Travel made her appreciate the abundance she already had, while also teaching her humility and respect for sacrifice. She often says that we are richer for the experience of meeting others and seeing life through their eyes.
Yet, through all of life’s journeys, spirituality has been her compass. Faith in the Almighty has sustained her in moments of testing and trial. She has seen the beauty of prayers answered and the blessings hidden in prayers seemingly denied. For her, there are no coincidences in life; every path is written, every door closed is followed by another opening. Her gratitude to God is woven into her daily life, grounding her ambitions in humility and balance.
Feeyola’s story is also one of creativity and leadership. She has always seen connections between beauty, empathy, and responsibility. Though once told that her soft nature meant she would never lead, she proved otherwise. Her ability to listen deeply, to read emotions, and to combine heart and logic made her a natural leader. She led her family through adversity, she inspired her daughter to see women as strong and independent, and she continues to guide others through her words and her work. Her published letters to her daughter became universal messages of strength, growth, and resilience, read by women across the globe.
Perhaps the truest expression of Feeyola’s wisdom and love is captured in her poem, a meditation on the many forms of love a woman carries in her lifetime.
A woman's love
As a child,
We love with no boundaries.
As a daughter,
We love no other.
As a teen,
We love with passion and with anger,
With jealousy and hatred.
We love grudgingly and in silence.
As a woman,
We love with emotion and compassion,
Breaking the bonds of normalcy,
With wanting and desires.
We love from the depths within.
As a wife,
We love with ease and comfort,
Giving our gift of heart and soul.
We love with dreams and hope
Of days to come, till to age we leave.
As a mother,
We love the stranger within,
Unconditional, untamed and unlike another.
An all-engulfing love that knows no bounds,
A protective love, a raging love and yet a silent love.
As a mother-in-law,
We love with understanding,
We love with acceptance,
We love with caution,
For we walked that path once and silent promises were made.
As a glam-ma,
Love has no bounds, for here love is given in all its glory.
It’s pure, it’s honest and it’s raw.
It’s a magnet, it’s laughter.
It’s a road that we once treaded and now have another chance,
To right the wrongs, to be more in the present…
For we loved, and lived and all too soon, it’s over.
A woman’s love is deep and special, changing as we grow,
But be sure it’s a love so strong and so pure,
So full of wisdom.
It’s the silent strength, the unwavering support,
The unspoken bond and the invisible shield of protection
That shapes her world.
The poem stands not just as art, but as testimony. It reflects a lifetime of love in all its forms — fierce, fragile, protective, forgiving, and eternal. It captures what Feeyola embodies: resilience through love, wisdom through experience, and beauty through imperfection.
Today, she continues to live with zest, determined to make every moment meaningful. For her, a zest for life is not simply about joy; it is about deliberate living. It is about seeing routine as opportunity, finding colour in monotony, and embracing each moment as a memory in the making. She urges others to stop retelling their stories of pain, to stop living as victims, and instead to take small steps forward. Every step is a victory, she insists, every victory a foundation for the future.
Her grandchildren will one day look back and remember a woman who taught them to live and not merely exist, to laugh often, to forgive quickly, to be kind, and to let go of anything that steals their peace. They will remember her as someone who turned lemons into recipes, obstacles into stepping stones, and pain into resilience.
If her life could be described as a dish, she says, it would be a fusion — unpredictable, colourful, comforting, and always made with love. And if her legacy could be captured in a single word, it would be resilience. She is, after all, bent but never broken.
Feeyola Dawood’s story is not one of survival alone, but of flourishing. It is the story of a woman who found strength in imperfection, beauty in resilience, and meaning in love. From the warmth of her South African roots to the opportunities she embraced in the UAE, her journey is a reminder that life is not something we simply carry or endure. It is something we can shape, colour, and celebrate — if only we are willing to look at it through different eyes.
