Under a fresh US-backed initiative aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine's European Union membership could be expedited to January 2027, according to an insider. Traditionally, securing EU membership is a lengthy endeavor requiring the unanimous consent of all 27 nations. Particular resistance from Hungary has long posed challenges for Kyiv.
This recent US proposal may involve possible territorial compromises by Ukraine to Russia, igniting significant diplomatic dialogue across Europe. European leaders and Ukraine are urging the US to offer explicit security assurances prior to engaging in discussions concerning disputed areas, as noted by the French presidency before a scheduled Berlin meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
President Zelensky underscored that the US holds pivotal influence over EU members currently hesitant to approve Ukraine's accession. Since the pro-European tumult of 2014, Kyiv has sought EU integration, undertaking sweeping reforms, although eliminating widespread corruption—a crucial EU prerequisite—continues to be a formidable task.
Conversely, Moscow has voiced doubt regarding modifications to the US plan, claiming that changes could complicate negotiations and extend the timeline for a resolution. Russian military activities persist, but Ukraine recently announced the reclaiming of significant positions near the vital city of Kupiansk, an essential railway nexus in the northeast. Zelensky took to the frontline there, sharing a video of his visit to the city's entrance.
The naval dimension of the conflict has intensified as well, with a recent Russian airstrike damaging a Turkish-owned cargo ship in Odesa. This attack has been confirmed by both Kyiv and the ship's operator, leading Turkey to insist on ending strikes that target port infrastructures. Previously, Ankara had alerted of a "worrying swelling" in tensions in the Black Sea, following Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian-associated vessels, reiterating calls for a cessation of hostilities in the area.
As diplomatic endeavors progress, Zelensky is expected in Berlin for more discussions with European officials and NATO leaders regarding peace negotiations and Ukraine’s EU aspirations. Despite the intricate road ahead, the US plan signifies a potential rapid pathway for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, depending on secure guarantees and the settlement of territorial conflicts.
