Most people believe infections only come from dirty places or from being around sick people. But sometimes, the risk is much closer and more common than we think. A health expert has shared that even a car’s windshield wiper fluid can carry harmful bacteria that may cause a serious lung infection known as Legionnaires’ disease.
Dr Alex Sundermann, an epidemiologist and public health professor at the University of Pittsburgh, shared this information in a recent video. He explained that some windshield wiper fluids can allow a bacteria called Legionella to grow. This bacteria is dangerous because it can cause a strong type of pneumonia that makes it very hard to breathe.
The bacteria gets into the air when the car’s wiper spray is turned on. The mist from the fluid can be inhaled by the driver or passengers. When this happens, the bacteria can travel into the lungs and cause infection. According to Dr Sundermann, this is not just a theory. There are real cases that have been studied.
One study looked at school buses and found that 84% of the buses tested had Legionella bacteria in their wiper fluid tanks. The amount of bacteria found was also very high. This means that whenever the wipers were used, the bacteria could easily spread into the air.
Another report showed that two truck drivers developed severe pneumonia. When doctors could not find any other reason for the infection, they checked the trucks. The bacteria was found growing inside the wiper fluid container, meaning the drivers likely breathed it in from the spray.
However, there is a simple way to prevent this. Dr Sundermann says that wiper fluid containing methanol is safer. Methanol works like a disinfectant and helps kill bacteria. But not all wiper fluids have it. Some types, especially those sold for summer, have very little or no methanol. This makes it easier for bacteria to grow.
The expert suggests choosing “all-season” wiper fluid because these usually contain enough methanol to stop bacteria growth. He also advises checking the label before buying. The bottle should clearly say “contains methanol.” Fluids without methanol should be avoided.
This warning reminds us that infections are not always caused by unusual or rare things. Sometimes, an ordinary everyday item can carry germs that we do not see. Even something as normal as cleaning your car’s windshield can have hidden risks if we are not careful.
Dr Sundermann explains that being aware is the first step. By choosing the right wiper fluid, people can easily protect themselves. It does not require extra effort, only attention to what we are buying.
Legionnaires’ disease is serious, but it can be prevented. Simple steps like checking labels, using trusted products, and maintaining car cleaning systems can reduce risk. Not everything that looks harmless is always safe, but good information helps us make safer choices.
The message is clear: health protection is not only about medicines or hospitals. It also comes from small decisions we make every day.
