Myanmar's Ministry of Energy is increasing the distribution of compressed natural gas (CNG) by launching new outlets in crucial regions such as Yangon, Mandalay, Magway, and other major townships. This initiative aims to facilitate smooth public transport while making fuel more accessible for commuters and operators.
Simultaneously, new stringent safety regulations for CNG vehicles have been implemented, addressing risks related to gas leaks, defective cylinders, and weak pipelines. Officials emphasized that only vehicles that successfully pass mandatory annual inspections can operate on CNG, to mitigate fire hazards and potential accidents.
The government will conduct thorough inspections of CNG cylinders, particularly those older than five years, with cylinders over 15 years facing stricter scrutiny and possible rejection and destruction in order to uphold safety standards. Vehicle owners must adhere to these inspection protocols or risk losing their fuel supply.
In addition, hefty penalties are now in place for those who do not comply. Vehicles that miss their inspection deadlines may face temporary or outright bans on CNG purchases. Authorities have urged all CNG vehicle owners to complete their inspections by April 30, 2026, to ensure continuous service and the safety of the traveling public.
