Dubai has taken a major step towards becoming a pedestrian-friendly city as Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarded the contract for Phase 1 of the Dubai Walk Master Plan in Al Ras.

The first phase focuses on developing the Historic Al Ras Walkway. The project includes 12 km of pedestrian walkways and 5 km of cycling tracks. It will also restore 10 artistic spaces in collaboration with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, with participation from Emirati and local artists.

Mattar Al Tayer said the Pedestrian Master Plan will strengthen Dubai’s global position in walkability and support the goals of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040. The plan aims to create a “20-minute city,” where residents can access over 80% of essential services within 20 minutes.

He added that the project will improve quality of life, enhance safety, and connect different areas of the city through modern and well-designed walkways. It will also include cultural and creative elements to improve the city’s appearance and identity.

Key Features of Al Ras Walkway

The Historic Al Ras Walkway will connect major heritage sites such as:

  • Al Ahmadiya School

  • Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House

  • Al Ras Public Library

  • Al Fahidi Fort

  • Al Shindagha Historic District

The walkway will also connect to 11 public transport stations, including metro, buses, and marine transport, making travel easier for residents and tourists.

Design and Facilities

The project will improve existing walkways while preserving the historical look of the area. Key improvements include:

  • Wider pedestrian paths

  • Shaded areas and seating

  • More green spaces

  • Clear signage and navigation systems

Artistic spaces will feature murals, sculptures, and modern lighting to highlight the cultural identity of the area. Seasonal events and art programs will also be organized to keep the area active.

Dubai Walk Master Plan Overview

The larger Dubai Walk Master Plan aims to develop over 6,000 km of walkways across 160 areas by 2040. It also includes:

  • 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses

  • Better connectivity between districts

  • Increased walking and soft mobility from 16% in 2025 to 25% by 2040

The first phase will run from 2025 to 2027, with further development continuing until 2040.

Smart and Modern Features

The walkways will include:

  • Shaded paths and cooling mist systems

  • Interactive digital screens and signage

  • Fitness and recreational areas

  • Barrier-free access for all users

  • Smart navigation integration

This project is part of Dubai’s long-term vision to create a safe, accessible, and attractive environment for walking, while improving urban connectivity and overall quality of life.
