DEWA Joins Global vPAC Alliance, Leading MENA Power Sector

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has marked a historic milestone by joining the global Virtual Protection Automation and Control (vPAC) Alliance, becoming the first utility in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to achieve this distinction. The announcement came during the 27th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2025), reflecting Dubai’s growing leadership in energy innovation and sustainable infrastructure.

The agreement was signed by Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission Power at DEWA, alongside Brant Heap, Chairperson of vPAC Alliance, in the presence of HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. This membership will enable DEWA’s engineers to collaborate with leading global energy companies, sharing knowledge, innovative solutions, and best practices in electricity and water network management.

Pioneering Smart Grid Technologies

DEWA’s participation in the vPAC Alliance aligns with Dubai’s vision to harness Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to enhance network efficiency and reliability. The alliance focuses on deploying advanced digital modular systems for power substations, developing open, secure, and interoperable standards, and accelerating software-based solutions for grid automation and control.

The utility has already achieved remarkable operational excellence. In 2024, DEWA reported the world’s lowest electricity transmission and distribution losses at just 2%, significantly below the 6%-7% seen in Europe and the US. It also set a global record for the lowest customer minutes lost, achieving only 0.94 minutes per year compared to the European Union average of 15 minutes.

Joining vPAC opens new horizons for DEWA in exchanging expertise on sustainable energy systems, enhancing smart grids, and developing infrastructure that keeps pace with rising energy and water demands.
