New Delhi: The world bids farewell to Dr Jane Goodall, the pioneering British primatologist whose work reshaped our understanding of animals and inspired millions to protect nature. She passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy that transcends science.

Born in London in 1934, Jane’s fascination with animals began in childhood. She would spend hours quietly observing creatures, once sitting in a chicken coop just to watch a hen lay an egg. This early curiosity would define her extraordinary life.

At 26, she travelled to Tanzania to study chimpanzees at Gombe Stream National Park, armed with only a notebook and binoculars. Her discoveries were revolutionary. Jane was the first to document chimpanzees using tools, challenging the belief that humans alone possessed this ability. She revealed their complex emotions, social bonds, and personalities, giving each chimp a name instead of a number.

Her groundbreaking books, In the Shadow of Man and The Chimpanzees of Gombe, chronicled decades of observation and established one of the longest-running wildlife studies in history. Jane’s work not only transformed primatology but also brought the natural world closer to human understanding.

In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute, extending her mission from research to conservation, community development, and education. The institute continues to protect chimpanzees and support local communities across Africa. In 1991, she launched Roots & Shoots, a youth program now active in over 100 countries, encouraging young people to take action for animals, people, and the planet.

Jane’s message was simple yet profound: “Every individual can make a difference.” She spent more than 300 days a year traveling, inspiring people worldwide, and promoting environmental stewardship. Over her six-decade career, she earned numerous honors, including being named a Dame of the British Empire and a UN Messenger of Peace, yet remained humble, calling herself “a girl who loved animals.”

Her passing leaves a profound void in science and conservation, but her spirit endures in forests, wildlife projects, and the countless young people she motivated. Jane Goodall’s life reminds us that humans are not separate from nature—they are part of it.
