Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Market crashes with BSE Sensex down by 1300 points; In Assam, Gaurav Gogoi leads in Jorhat by 365 votes

Counting of votes polled across 543 constituencies for Lok Sabha elections began on June 4. The Surat seat in Gujarat was won uncontested by the BJP after Congress nominee's nomination papers were rejected, and other candidates opted out of the race.

Among key constituencies is Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh as PM Narendra Modi targets a third straight term as MP for the seat, which he chose as a launchpad to national politics in 2014. Eyes are on whether the National Democratic Alliance, led by the BJP, will see a return to power or if the Opposition's INDIA bloc can defy the exit polls' predictions.

Citing the Conduct of Election Rules, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on June 3 said the count of postal ballots would start first across all counting centres and asserted that there was "no doubt about it".

All major exit polls published after the seventh and the last phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls ended on June 1 predicted a third term for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The polls indicated that the NDA may end up winning close to 360 seats. On the other hand, the INDIA bloc is projected to win about 150 seats. However, decrying the predictions, INDIA bloc parties called the exit polls bogus.

West Bengal: TMC, BJP in neck and neck fight
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were on June 4 locked in a neck-and-neck contest in West Bengal as counting of postal ballots for the Lok Sabha polls got underway, with the former having a slight edge, TV channels reported.

Bengali news channel ABP Ananda reported that TMC was leading in three seats, while the BJP and the Congress were ahead in one seat each. Another Bengali news channel TV 9 Bangla, reported that TMC was leading in five, whereas the BJP was ahead in four and the Congress in one.

As per early trends, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is leading from the Sambalpur seat. Sambalpur in western Odisha is set for a high-octane electoral battle between BJP leader and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) organising secretary Pranab Prakash Das.

The seat falls in the BJP stronghold of western Odisha where the party has wide acceptance that is largely attributed to the presence of organizations affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Andhra Pradesh BJP State President D. Purandeswari is leading with 8984 votes against her rival and YSRCP Guduri Chakradhar in Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency.

According to the Election Commission of India, Ms. Purandeswari has received 47,696 votes while Mr. Chakradhar received 38,712 votes.
