The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi is all set to reopen its newly renovated Terminal 2 (T2) on October 26, 2025. The terminal, which has undergone a major upgrade to improve passenger comfort and flight operations, will now handle several domestic airlines with modern facilities and faster services.
New Look and Better Facilities
The revamped Terminal 2 has been redesigned to offer a smoother and faster travel experience. The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said the terminal now features a larger check-in area, improved baggage systems, new waiting lounges, and better food courts.
New digital boards, touch-screen kiosks, and smart security lanes have been installed to make the passenger journey easier. The terminal also includes energy-efficient lighting, wider walkways, and more comfortable seating areas.
Officials said that the renovation was done keeping in mind the growing number of air travelers in the capital. The aim is to ensure that passengers experience less crowding and shorter waiting times.
Airlines Moving to Terminal 2
From October 26, some domestic flights that were earlier operating from Terminal 1 will now move to Terminal 2.
According to DIAL, IndiGo and SpiceJet are among the airlines that will start operating part of their flights from the upgraded terminal. This change is being made to balance air traffic between terminals and provide passengers with a better experience.
Travelers are advised to check their flight details carefully before arriving at the airport to avoid confusion.
“Passengers should always verify their terminal information before heading to the airport. Updated flight details are available on airline websites and at the airport’s information centers,” a DIAL spokesperson said.
Why the Shift Was Needed
The expansion and modernization of Terminal 2 were part of a larger airport development plan to handle Delhi’s rising passenger numbers. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is India’s busiest, serving more than 70 million passengers a year.
With air travel increasing after the pandemic, the airport authorities decided to spread out flight operations to reduce congestion at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
The new layout will also make it easier for airlines to schedule flights and for passengers to move between terminals through shuttle buses and improved signage.
Passenger Guidelines and Travel Tips
The airport authority has released a set of guidelines for travelers using the newly opened terminal:
Arrive early – Passengers are advised to reach the airport at least 2 hours before domestic flights to complete check-in and security procedures smoothly.
Check the terminal before leaving home – Flight details may have changed due to the reopening of T2.
Use digital check-in – Self-check-in kiosks are available to save time and avoid queues.
Follow security instructions – New scanning machines have been installed for faster checks, but travelers should still pack carefully.
Public transport – Delhi Metro, buses, and taxis are available to reach the terminal easily.
Officials have also confirmed that eco-friendly electric buses will run between terminals for connecting passengers.
Focus on Sustainability
The renovation project was not only about comfort but also about sustainability. Terminal 2 has been built using green technology to reduce its impact on the environment.
The building uses solar energy, recycled water systems, and waste reduction measures. It has been designed to qualify for a “Green Building” certification, making it one of India’s most eco-friendly airport terminals.
“We wanted to make a terminal that is both passenger-friendly and environmentally responsible,” said a senior DIAL official. “Our goal is to make IGI Airport a global model for green aviation.”
Impact on Flight Operations
With T2 reopening, flight operations at Terminal 1 will be reduced to ease crowding. This is expected to improve on-time performance, reduce delays, and enhance passenger flow across the airport.
DIAL said it expects the upgraded terminal to handle around 15 million passengers per year. The next phase of expansion may include additional check-in counters and more gates for domestic flights.
What Passengers Can Expect
Travelers using Terminal 2 from October 26 will notice several improvements, including:
Faster check-in and baggage drop services
Improved seating and charging points
Larger food and retail zones with popular brands
Digital boarding passes and smart gates
Enhanced lighting and sound systems for a calmer atmosphere
Many passengers who got a preview of the new design have praised its clean look and better space management.
“It feels like a completely new airport,” said one traveler who visited during the test phase. “The queues are shorter, and everything looks modern and comfortable.”
A Step Toward Future Growth
The reopening of Terminal 2 is part of Delhi Airport’s long-term plan to become a global aviation hub. With multiple modernization projects underway, IGIA aims to handle over 100 million passengers per year in the near future.
The airport already operates three runways and is preparing to add new facilities to support international connectivity.
