In a shocking revelation, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee has become the latest high-profile victim of cyber fraud, highlighting the growing risks faced by citizens and public representatives alike. Over Rs 57 lakh was siphoned from one of his dormant accounts at the State Bank of India (SBI) through unauthorised transactions.
Banerjee, representing Serampore in West Bengal, expressed deep concern about cybercrime. “If a person like me can fall into a bank fraud trap, what will the common people face? Why is the Ministry of Finance not setting up an anti-cyber fraud unit?” he questioned.
The MP’s account, which he had not operated for several years, was reportedly opened between 2001 and 2006 while he served as MLA of Asansol South. Cybercriminals allegedly used forged PAN and Aadhaar cards and superimposed Banerjee’s photo to carry out the scam. Multiple transactions drained nearly Rs 57 lakh from the account, initially going unnoticed.
The bank, upon detecting suspicious activity, immediately lodged a complaint with the Kolkata Police cybercrime division. Banerjee confirmed that SBI credited the amount back to his parliamentary account, citing an internal fault as the reason behind the unauthorised transactions.
Investigators are now probing how the fraud was orchestrated and reviewing the bank’s internal procedures to prevent such incidents in the future. This case serves as a stark reminder that even seasoned public figures are vulnerable to cybercrime, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced protective measures and public awareness.
