The way people pay for goods and services has changed significantly over the past decade. Digital payments, contactless technology, mobile wallets, and global e-commerce have pushed credit cards and card-based payments to the forefront — while cash usage continues to decline in many countries. However, cash is still widely used in specific situations and regions. This guide explains how credit cards and cash are used today, what trends are shaping payment habits globally, and why one method may be more dominant than the other depending on where you are and what you’re buying.
Credit cards allow users to borrow funds from a bank to make purchases — with the option to pay later, earn rewards, and build credit history. Cash is physical currency used directly at the point of sale without intermediaries, credit checks, or electronic systems. Both have distinct advantages and remaining use-cases.
Across most high-income countries, card payments — especially credit and debit cards — dominate retail and online transactions. With contactless cards, tap-to-pay technology, mobile wallets, and integrated payment terminals, people increasingly choose card payments for convenience and speed. COVID-19 also accelerated card and digital payments due to hygiene concerns and the desire to avoid touching cash.
Credit cards are widely used for:
In many developed markets, credit cards are the preferred everyday payment method for groceries, dining, travel, and recurring bills.
While card payments are rising, cash remains relevant in several contexts:
Globally, card-based and digital payments are used more often than cash in retail and online transactions, especially in urban and developed regions. Surveys and payment data from recent years show that:
Card payments have surpassed cash for everyday purchases in many countries
Mobile wallets and contactless payments are rapidly growing, often tied to cards
Online shopping primarily uses credit or debit cards, or digital wallets linked to cards
Cash remains common only in specific situations and in regions with limited banking access
Everyday retail: Cards are preferred where terminals are available
Online shopping: Almost exclusively credit or debit cards
Small vendors/markets: Cash still widely used
Dining out: Mid-to-large restaurants accept cards; small cafés may prefer cash
Taxis/public transport: Card use is growing, but cash remains common in some cities
Credit cards usually offer better fraud protection and easy dispute processes. Lost or stolen cards can be blocked; unauthorized transactions are often reversible. Cash, once lost or stolen, is gone permanently. This security advantage encourages card use, especially for larger purchases.
Cash tends to feel more “real,” leading some people to spend less when they see physical money leaving their hands. Cards, especially credit cards, can disconnect spending from the real cost, sometimes encouraging overspending. Personal budgeting habits influence which method works better for an individual.
The pandemic accelerated the decline of cash and adoption of contactless payments. Many retailers reduced or removed cash handling for hygiene reasons, pushing consumers toward cards and mobile wallets.
Digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay), buy-now-pay-later services, and QR code payments blur the line between card and cash by offering card-like convenience without physical plastic. These technologies favor card-linked systems overall.
Credit cards are ideal for security, rewards, and online purchases, especially in urban or developed markets. Cash remains useful for small sellers, tipping, and areas without reliable electronic terminals.
Carry a mix of cards and local currency when traveling. Cards are broadly accepted in cities, while cash is essential for markets, tips, and remote areas. Always check local payment habits before travel.
Cash use continues to decline globally, but it will likely persist as a backup and in informal economies. Card and digital transactions are projected to grow as infrastructure, mobile adoption, and contactless technology expand.
