Dhaka, Bangladesh: In a landmark verdict on Monday, a Dhaka court sentenced Sheikh Rehana, sister of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to seven years in prison for corruption linked to the acquisition of prime plots in the capital. Rehana’s daughter, Tulip Siddiq, a British lawmaker, received a two-year sentence in the same case, prosecutors confirmed.

The court also sentenced former premier Hasina, along with 14 other government officials, to five years in prison for their involvement. The 78-year-old Hasina has been living in India since her ouster last year amid a student-led uprising, while Rehana’s current location remains unconfirmed.

Details of the Case

The Anti-Corruption Commission stated that Siddiq actively participated in lobbying for land allocations, pressuring her aunt Hasina to secure plots for her mother and siblings. Investigators revealed that Siddiq used encrypted communication and in-person meetings with Salahuddin Ahmed, the former principal secretary, to facilitate the process.

Prosecutor Khan Mainul Hasan explained, “Tulip insisted that her aunt Sheikh Hasina allocate plots for her mother and siblings, as she herself took three — one for her and two for her children.”

Court Proceedings

Judge Rabiul Alam, quoting verses from the Holy Quran, emphasized that the court holds authority to try any Bangladeshi citizen, regardless of their residence abroad. The interim government has indicated that British authorities will be formally notified about Siddiq’s conviction.

Tulip Siddiq, who stepped down as the UK’s anti-corruption minister earlier this year amid related investigations, has described the trial as a “persecution and a farce.” There has been no immediate comment from Rehana or the broader family.

Implications

The ruling has intensified political tension in Bangladesh, highlighting ongoing scrutiny of former leaders and their families. Analysts suggest that the verdict could have implications for Bangladesh’s diplomatic relations, especially given Siddiq’s political role in the UK and Hasina’s presence in India.
