The Canadian government has appointed a new judge for Quebec's Superior Court. Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, announced that Mireille Pélissier-Simard will take her place on the bench for the Quebec district.

This selection is part of the federal involvement in judicial appointments initiated in 2016, emphasizing principles such as transparency and diversity. Officials reaffirmed that the aim is to nominate judges who demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and legal skill.

Justice Pélissier-Simard succeeds Justice D. Dumais, who has recently been promoted to Senior Associate Chief Justice of the Superior Court. This transition supports the ongoing commitment to strong judicial leadership.

Prior to her appointment, Pélissier-Simard served as a family mediator and lawyer in Quebec, anchoring her practice in family and human rights law over more than 20 years. She earned her law degree from Laval University and joined the Barreau du Québec in 1997.

Her career has included significant contributions to legal education, often participating as a speaker at conferences and authoring several family law publications. Additionally, she has been active in professional legal organizations, including the Barreau de Québec and the Association des familialistes de Québec.

Moreover, she has taught human rights law at Laval University and recently crafted a report on child support systems commissioned by Quebec's Ministry of Justice, showcasing her expertise in family law.

Minister Fraser highlighted his confidence in Justice Pélissier-Simard’s dedication and professionalism, believing her extensive background will greatly benefit the court system.

This appointment represents Canada’s ongoing initiatives to enhance the judicial framework by appointing skilled and experienced legal professionals to enhance community representation.
