Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
China has extended an official invitation to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for a visit to the country, expressing a keen interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation across various sectors with the newly elected government in Dhaka. Following a meeting between Foreign Minister Hassan Mahmud and Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen, discussions are underway to determine a suitable time for Prime Minister Hasina's visit to Beijing.
This invitation comes after the Awami League, led by Hasina, secured a fourth consecutive term in the January 7 elections, which were boycotted by the major opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The Chinese government, through its ambassador, reiterated its commitment to enhancing bilateral relations during the tenure of the new government in Bangladesh.
After the polls, Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Hasina, expressing confidence in the continued strengthening of ties between the two nations. There were earlier plans for Hasina to visit China in September of the previous year, but election-related commitments prevented the trip from taking place.
The invitation from China follows statements from Bangladesh's ruling party highlighting India's support during the elections. However, Foreign Minister Mahmud emphasized that there is no reason for strained relations with India, and he credited Prime Minister Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi for breaking down walls of confusion and mistrust.
A senior foreign ministry official noted that Bangladesh aims to maintain a balanced relationship with both India and China, recognizing the importance of both neighbors for the country's stability and development. Analysts commend Prime Minister Hasina for skillfully navigating the competing interests of India and China, as Bangladesh finds itself strategically positioned between these two major Asian powers. Notably, both India and China have described the Bangladesh elections as an internal matter, while Western powers, including the United States, have called for credible polls.
