Coffee is a drink enjoyed by many people every day. It helps them feel awake and active. But now, a new study says coffee may also help protect the heart, especially for people who have irregular heartbeats. This condition is known as atrial fibrillation. It happens when the heart beats too fast and not in a steady rhythm. This can be dangerous and may lead to stroke or heart failure if not managed properly.
The study was published on November 9, 2025, in the medical journal JAMA Network. The research included around 200 older adults from the United States, Canada, and Australia. All of them had atrial fibrillation and were regular coffee drinkers. The researchers divided them into two groups. One group continued drinking at least one cup of coffee every day. The other group stopped drinking coffee for six months.
The health of all participants was watched closely using heart monitors and ECG tests. After some time, the scientists compared the results. They found that the group who continued drinking coffee had fewer repeat episodes of irregular heartbeat. About 47% of them faced the problem again, while 53% did not. But in the group that stopped drinking coffee, around 64% had another episode of irregular heartbeat. This means that drinking coffee lowered the chances of the problem coming back by around 39%.
The researchers believe this may happen because coffee has natural compounds that reduce inflammation in the body. When inflammation is low, the heart may work more smoothly. Another idea is that coffee may support healthy heart function by improving how the body responds to stress.
This study shows that moderate coffee drinking is safe for people with irregular heartbeat. Earlier, many believed coffee was harmful for the heart in such cases. But this new research suggests the opposite. Still, this does not mean one should drink too much coffee. Drinking too much caffeine can disturb sleep or cause nervousness. So, balance is important.
If someone has a heart condition, they should talk to their doctor before making changes to their diet. Every person’s health is different, and a doctor can advise what is best for them.
