China’s Aerospace Information Research Institute has initiated an ambitious observation experiment to study the land-atmosphere interactions in the Mount Qomolangma region of southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region. This project aims to deepen the understanding of ecological and climate systems by examining the relationship between the land surface and the atmosphere.
Researcher Jia Li emphasized the importance of this study, stating, "In the Mount Qomolangma region, land-atmosphere interactions not only affect the climate of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and its surrounding areas but also have the potential to influence the global climate through complex climate feedback mechanisms and atmospheric circulation."
The unique conditions of the Mount Qomolangma region, with an average elevation of approximately 4,200 meters on the northern side, make it an ideal site for such research. The research team will utilize unmanned aerial platforms to gather data, focusing on the spatial distribution of radiation flux between the land surface and the atmosphere.

The study is particularly crucial given the rapidly changing climatic conditions that are causing glaciers and snow to melt faster. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) highlighted the significance of this in its 2019 Summary of the Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment Report, which provided ample evidence for elevation-dependent warming (EDW) in the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions. Further emphasizing the urgency, ICIMOD's 2023 report noted that 79 glaciers around Everest have thinned by over 100 meters in the past six decades, with the thinning rate nearly doubling since 2009.
According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, the researchers from the Aerospace Information Research Institute will collect data on various aspects, including the radiation flux, using both ground-station and remote-sensing satellite data. These comprehensive multi-temporal and multi-spatial observations aim to provide a detailed understanding of the interactions between the land and the atmosphere.
This is not the first research initiative by China in the region. In May 2022, the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research conducted a ground-penetrating radar survey of snow depth along the north slope of Mount Everest. These continuous efforts underscore the importance of understanding the climatic and ecological dynamics of the Tibetan Plateau, often referred to as the "roof of the world."
Through these studies, scientists hope to gain insights that could inform global climate models and contribute to more effective climate change mitigation strategies. The findings from this research could have significant implications, not only for the local environment but also for global climate patterns.
