China is planning to give money to families who have children, as the country tries to increase its birth rate. The government will offer 3,600 yuan (about $503) each year for every child born on or after January 1, 2025. Families will get this money until the child turns three years old.
This new plan is part of a nationwide program to help parents with the cost of raising children and to encourage more people to have kids.
Why Is China Doing This?
China is facing a big problem—fewer babies are being born every year. For three years in a row, from 2022 to 2024, the number of people in China has gone down. In 2023, India passed China to become the most populous country in the world.
In 2016, after China ended its one-child policy, about 18.8 million babies were born. But in 2024, that number dropped to just 9.54 million. That’s almost half.

The falling number of babies is a serious issue for China. A smaller population means fewer workers in the future, and this can hurt the country’s economy. Without enough people working, it’s hard to keep building and growing the country.
Fewer Marriages, Fewer Births
Another reason for fewer children is that fewer people are getting married. Marriage rates in China have hit the lowest level in nearly 50 years. Without marriage, many couples choose not to have kids.
This situation is worrying the Chinese government. If things don’t change, experts say China’s population may fall to 1.3 billion by 2050 and could go below 800 million by the year 2100.
What Is the Government Doing?
To solve this problem, the government is looking at many new ideas. One of the biggest is to give cash to families for every child they have.
The new plan will give money for every child born starting this year. That means if a baby is born in 2025, the parents will get 3,600 yuan each year until the child turns three.
This money will help pay for food, clothes, education, and medical care—all the things children need.
Some Cities Are Giving More Help
Some local governments in China are also giving extra help. For example, Hohhot, a city in Inner Mongolia, is giving 50,000 yuan to families with a second child, and 100,000 yuan if they have a third child. That’s a lot of money, and it shows how serious the country is about fixing this problem.
Other cities are offering housing help, discounts, and job support to families with children. These steps are all part of a larger plan to make life easier for parents and to encourage bigger families.
Will It Work?
It is still uncertain whether these cash handouts and programs will change people’s minds. Many young people in China say it is too expensive to raise children. Others worry about work-life balance, high housing costs, or job pressure.
Even with the money, some couples may still decide not to have children unless they feel secure and supported in the long run.
China’s new plan to give families money for each child is a bold step to fight a serious population problem. With fewer births, fewer marriages, and a shrinking workforce, the country is trying hard to find solutions.
Helping families with money may make a difference, but experts say more support is needed—like better jobs, affordable homes, and good schools—to create a safer, happier life for families.
This plan is not just about babies. It is about China’s future—its economy, its society, and the well-being of the next generation.
