China’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday demanded that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi retract comments she made regarding Taiwan, describing them as “egregious” and warning that Japan “must bear all consequences” if it fails to do so.
Takaichi’s remarks, made last week in Japan’s parliament, suggested that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could constitute a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, potentially triggering a military response from Tokyo. The comments have sparked a diplomatic row between Beijing and Tokyo, with Chinese officials criticizing the statement as a provocation that undermines regional stability.
China’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that such rhetoric threatens peace and security in the Taiwan Strait and urged Japan to exercise caution in public statements concerning sensitive territorial issues. The ministry’s warning reflects Beijing’s zero-tolerance approach toward perceived interference in Taiwan-related matters.
Japan has yet to respond officially to China’s demand for a retraction, but analysts note that the remarks could complicate diplomatic engagement between the two countries, especially amid ongoing tensions over regional security and military posturing.
Observers say that the situation underscores the fragile balance in East Asia, where Taiwan remains a flashpoint between China and nations closely monitoring potential conflicts in the region. The international community is watching closely, as further escalation could have significant geopolitical implications.
China’s warning to Japan follows a series of heightened exchanges in recent months over Taiwan, with both sides emphasizing their strategic and security priorities while seeking to maintain overall diplomatic engagement.
