Chelsea striker Liam Delap has returned to team training after recovering from a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million in June, picked up the injury during a 2-0 win over Fulham in August.
Despite being back in training, manager Enzo Maresca confirmed Delap will not be available for Chelsea’s Premier League home game against Sunderland this weekend. Maresca suggested he could be ready for upcoming matches, possibly the League Cup game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Delap was initially expected to miss six to eight weeks due to the injury. Later updates indicated he might be out until December, but his participation in training sessions shows he is progressing toward a return. Maresca noted, “Liam took part of the session yesterday with the team for the first time. He is not going to be available for tomorrow but probably for the next one.”
Chelsea recalled 19-year-old Spanish striker Marc Guiu from a season-long loan at Sunderland after Delap’s injury. Guiu struggled initially in training but has improved significantly. Maresca praised his dedication, stating, “We had a chat with Marc a few weeks ago. I told him about the way he was training. He needed to change. He changed and he got a chance.”
The manager explained that Guiu’s initial lack of effort in training prevented him from starting earlier. Since correcting his approach, Guiu has shown excellent work ethic and is now ready to contribute to Chelsea’s matches. Maresca emphasized the importance of gradual development for young players and acknowledged Guiu’s positive response to guidance.
Chelsea aims for a fifth successive win in all competitions after a 5-1 Champions League victory over Ajax. This weekend, they face promoted Sunderland, who have collected 14 points in their opening eight matches and sit seventh in the league. Maresca praised Sunderland’s team play and physical strength, highlighting the challenge Chelsea will face.
Maresca drew comparisons to his time in the Championship with Leicester City, appreciating Sunderland’s approach under French manager Regis Le Bris. He noted that Sunderland plays well as a team, works hard, and demonstrates both physical and tactical strength, making them a tough opponent.
Chelsea looks to maintain their winning momentum despite Delap’s absence. With Marc Guiu ready to step in and the team’s strong form in the Champions League, Maresca remains confident in navigating challenges and continuing success in both domestic and European competitions.
