India and New Zealand are ready to fight for one of cricket’s most prestigious trophies—the Champions Trophy. This tournament is back after seven years, and India, who finished as runners-up in 2017, will be determined to avoid another heartbreak. However, they face a tough challenge from New Zealand, a team that has caused them trouble in big matches before.
The Black Caps stunned India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final, knocking them out of the tournament. Although New Zealand fell short in the final against England due to a boundary count rule, they proved that they are a strong team on the biggest stage. Many players from that 2019 match are still part of both squads today. For India, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja were all part of that loss. On the New Zealand side, Kane Williamson, Mitchell Santner, Tom Latham, and Matt Henry played crucial roles in that famous win.

Virat Kohli: The Run Machine in Top Form
Virat Kohli has once again shown why he is one of the best batters in world cricket. He has been brilliant in this Champions Trophy, scoring 217 runs in four matches, including an unbeaten century that helped India reach the semi-finals. Kohli always steps up in big games. In India’s last two ICC finals, he played crucial knocks—54 against Australia in the 2023 World Cup final and a match-winning 76 against South Africa in the T20 World Cup final earlier this year.
Kohli will be eager to make an impact in this final, especially after missing out on a big score in his 300th ODI last Sunday against New Zealand. If India is to lift the trophy, their star batter will have a major role to play.
Varun Chakravarthy: India’s Secret Weapon
Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has become a major talking point ahead of the final. The 33-year-old has troubled the New Zealand batters with his unpredictable variations and already picked up a five-wicket haul against them in this tournament.
Dubai’s pitch is known to help spinners, and Chakravarthy will be confident of making an impact once again. New Zealand’s head coach Gary Stead has acknowledged the threat he poses, saying, “Varun is a big challenge for us. We need to find a way to score runs against him.” This shows that the Black Caps are already thinking about how to handle him. If Chakravarthy performs well, he could be the match-winner for India.
Shubman Gill: The Future Leader of Indian Cricket
Young opener Shubman Gill has been making headlines, not just for his batting but also for his leadership potential. With rumors that Rohit Sharma might retire from ODIs after this tournament, Gill is being groomed for a bigger role in the team. Even Rohit has hinted that the young batter is being prepared for more responsibilities in the future.
Gill has handled pressure well in this tournament, especially since being named vice-captain. He set the tone with a brilliant unbeaten century in India’s first match against Bangladesh and has been consistent since. If he delivers in the final, it will further prove that he is ready to take on greater responsibilities.
Kane Williamson: New Zealand’s Big-Game Player
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has always been a reliable performer in crucial matches. He has been in great form recently, scoring three centuries against South Africa, including one in the semi-final.
During the group stage, he kept New Zealand in the chase against India but didn’t get enough support from the other end. Like Kohli, Williamson is a player who thrives in pressure situations.
There’s also a bit of history between these two captains. Back in 2008, Williamson led New Zealand to victory over Kohli’s India in the U-19 World Cup semi-finals. That rivalry will continue in this final, where both players will be looking to lead their teams to glory.
Matt Henry: New Zealand’s Pace Ace Racing Against Time
New Zealand pacer Matt Henry has been one of the most dangerous bowlers in this tournament. However, he is currently battling a shoulder injury that he suffered while taking a diving catch in the semi-final.
Henry has been a nightmare for Indian batters in past ICC events. In the 2019 World Cup semi-final, he played a key role in New Zealand’s victory, dismissing Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Dinesh Karthik early to leave India struggling at 24 for 4.
Dubai’s conditions are different from England's, but Henry has already shown that he can adapt. In his last game at this venue, he took 5 for 42. If he recovers in time for the final, he will be one of New Zealand’s biggest weapons against India’s top order.
A High-Stakes Final
With both teams carrying memories and a strong desire to win, the Champions Trophy final promises to be an exciting battle. India is looking to end their ICC trophy drought, while New Zealand wants to prove that it can win a major final.
All eyes will be on the key players—Kohli, Chakravarthy, Gill, Williamson, and Henry—who can decide the fate of the match. Fans can expect a thrilling contest as these two cricketing giants clash for glory.
