Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand is expected to visit India next month, in what is being seen as a key step to reset strained ties between Ottawa and New Delhi.
According to diplomatic sources, Anand will hold talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The final dates of the visit are still being worked out, but officials on both sides are already preparing the ground.
This marks the first high-level ministerial trip between the two nations since relations hit rock bottom in 2023. At that time, tensions spiked after the Canadian government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of being linked to the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. New Delhi strongly rejected the charges, and both countries expelled dozens of diplomats, pushing ties to their lowest point in decades.

Since then, however, the situation has gradually improved. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney in June this year on the sidelines of the G7 summit. That meeting paved the way for a thaw, and both governments agreed to move past the bitterness and work on cooperation.
Adding to the positive momentum, India recently appointed veteran diplomat Dinesh Patnaik as its new High Commissioner to Canada. Ottawa too has shown readiness to restore its full diplomatic staff in India, after more than two years of restrictions.
Anand’s visit is therefore seen as a breakthrough moment. Key issues on the agenda are expected to include trade ties, student mobility, investment opportunities, and regional security cooperation. Both governments are keen to show their citizens and the world that India-Canada relations are back on track.
