Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada has revealed a significant transformation in the nation's defence approach, asserting that the country will lessen its dependency on US military suppliers while striving for greater strategic self-sufficiency.

During a Liberal Party event, Carney articulated that the traditional framework, wherein a sizable portion of Canada’s defence budget is allocated to American firms, is “not viable anymore.” He underscored the necessity for the nation to evolve in response to a swiftly changing global landscape by enhancing local defence capabilities and diversifying its international alliances.

At present, about 70 percent of Canada’s military procurement expenditures go to US-based companies. Carney labeled this a structural disparity that constrains Canada’s agility and resilience, especially given the rising geopolitical tensions and evolving global security scenarios.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of bolstering investments in local industries while investigating new defence collaborations beyond the borders of the United States. He indicated that this initiative is part of a larger ambition to forge a more self-reliant and secure national defence framework.

This policy realignment emerges against a backdrop of increasing global uncertainties, marked by conflicts involving major powers and rapid advancements in technologies, like artificial intelligence. Carney described the current period as “transformational,” calling on Canadians to back initiatives aimed at fortifying the country’s long-term security and economic stability.

Experts predict that this initiative could fundamentally alter Canada’s defence sector and lessen its reliance on outside vendors over time. However, it may necessitate substantial investment and cooperative efforts to cultivate domestic capacities and establish new global partnerships.

This announcement marks an evident shift in Canada’s defence strategy, encapsulating an increasing emphasis on independence and flexibility in an intricate global arena.
