Singapore's Energy Crisis: A Greater Strain on Manufacturers

Manufacturers in Singapore are grappling with intense financial challenges due to the ongoing energy crisis linked to disruptions in the Middle East. Industry leaders indicate that the current circumstances are even more daunting than those experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic, with escalating fuel prices affecting nearly every facet of production and logistics.

Business owners report that the spike in oil-related interruptions has significantly raised costs across packaging, transportation, production, and freight. Thomas Pek remarked that the crisis has triggered widespread cost inflation, complicating efforts for companies to keep pricing stable.

Pek noted that industrial diesel prices have soared sharply, jumping from approximately $1.20 per litre in February to nearly $3 per litre by April. Additionally, shortages of PET resin have pushed packaging costs higher, further exacerbating the financial pressure on manufacturers.

Consequently, some companies are contemplating price increases. Pek mentioned that his company might raise soy sauce prices by 10 to 15 percent if current cost pressures persist, showcasing the broader implications for consumers.

Raymond Tan described how many firms are currently navigating the crisis by using existing stockpiles. However, he cautioned that once these supplies run out, the effects of elevated input costs will become indisputable.

Manufacturers have already started modifying their operations to adapt to rising expenses, which includes consolidating deliveries and rescheduling production to lower fuel consumption. Concurrently, freight costs have become increasingly unpredictable due to heightened insurance charges and global risk-related surcharges.

Experts also highlight escalating fertiliser prices, with global urea costs rising sharply owing to supply disruptions and trade restrictions. This situation could create a ripple effect on agriculture and food production, potentially resulting in additional price hikes in the upcoming months.
